Joplin Blasters News Release

Kansas City, KS - The Blasters ended a three-game losing streak behind a strong rookie start and some timely hitting with an 8-1 victory over the T-Bones Saturday night at Community America Ballpark.

Joplin (44-41) pulled within a game of wild-card leading Laredo as the Lemurs lost at Wichita Saturday. Kansas City (43-41) now sits a half-game back of the Blasters in the American Association wild-card standings.

After two scoreless innings to start the contest, Joplin plated an unearned run in the third and scored two more in the fourth. With one out in the third, Mitch Glasser reached on a ground ball error by the shortstop. Jairo Perez followed with a single to left. Matt Padgett then brought in Glasser with a base hit lined up the middle into center. It was Padgett's first RBI in a Blasters uniform. Joplin used a two-out rally in the fourth to add two more tallies. Oscar Mesa reached on an infield single up the third base line. Glasser walked. Perez smacked a line drive two-run single up the right field line and into the corner for a 3-0 advantage.

The Blasters broke it open in the fifth. Omar Luna led off the inning with a single to left. Carlos Ramirez singled to center on a line-drive that ricocheted off the pitcher and into the outfield. Jake Taylor loaded the bases with a walk. Following a fly out, Aaron Brill crushed a grand-slam into the bullpens deep to left-center for a 7-0 cushion. It was Brill's first home run and Joplin's second grand-slam in the team's inaugural season. The two teams traded runs in the sixth for the game's final margin.

On the mound, rookie right-hander Josh Evans posted the win for the Blasters. Evans (1-1) worked five-and-two-thirds and yielded just one earned run on four hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Bobby Doran took the loss for Kansas City. Doran (8-5) lasted four-and-a-third and allowed seven runs (six earned) on ten hits with three walks.

The Blasters outhit the T-Bones 12-to-7. Jairo Perez and Omar Luna both had three-hit nights. Perez drove in two and scored a run. Luna had one RBI with a run scored. Oscar Mesa collected two hits with a run. Jacob Hayes was the only Kansas City batter to pick up two hits.

Joplin's road trip concludes with game four in Kansas City Sunday afternoon at 1:05. The final Blasters home stand of the season starts Monday and runs from August 24th through August 30th against Lincoln and Grand Prairie.
