St. Paul Saints News Release

ST. PAUL, MN - Danny Gutierrez's Saints debut ended abruptly after nearly an hour and a half rain delay as the Saints fell to the Sioux Falls Canaries 6-0 in front of 7,752 at CHS Field Saturday night.

The Canaries jumped out to a 1-0 in the first and never looked back behind a strong start from the right hander Shawn Blackwell. David Bergin singled with two outs in the first to drive in Chris Grayson who led the ballgame off with a single to put the Birds on the board.

Gutierrez appeared to bounce back in second after retiring the first two batters he faced before five straight Canaries batters reached. Cody Bishop singled and stole second before Brett Balkan singled to right to make it 2-0 Canaries. Chris Grayson slugged an RBI double to the left field corner. Jason Repko hit a ground ball to short that was fielded by Phillips before a throwing error allowed the third run of the inning to come around for the Canaries and push their lead to 4-0.

In the fourth, Jason Repko made it 5-0 Canaries with an RBI single to center. Gutierrez would finish out the inning with no further damage before the tarp came on the field. After an hour and 23 minute rain delay, Gutierrez's night would end after allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits with a hit batter, two wild pitches, and a pair of strikeouts in 4.0 innings. The Canaries who came into play at the bottom of the American Association in stolen bases swiped four bags across Gutierrez's 4.0 innings with Vinny DiFazio behind the plate.

The Saints offense collected just five, one each through the first five innings, and struck out 10 times as Shawn Blackwell went the distance for the Canaries. Shutout for the just the third time this season, the Saints are now mired in a .216 hitting slump over their last 11 games.

Chris Peacock turned in 3.0 scoreless innings of relief for St. Paul, allowing just two hits in his longest appearance of the season as the Saints defense backed him with a pair of double plays.

The Saints will face the Sioux Falls Canaries in the finale of the three game series on Sunday evening at 5:05 p.m. The Saints will send out LHP - Kramer Sneed (13-2, 2.73). The first 1,000 fans in attendance will receive a CHS Field replica presented by CHS. The game can be seen on the Saints Cable Network, cable access channels in the Twin Cities area, and in the ballpark on 97.9 FM. There is no radio for Sunday night's game.
