Saints Drop First Series at CHS Field Lose 10-3 to Canaries

ST. PAUL, MN (August 23, 2015) - The Saints continued their offensive slide and Kramer Sneed was hit around in his 5.0 innings as the Saints fell 10-3 to the Canaries in front of 8,297 at CHS Field Sunday evening. The 10 runs and 21 hits allowed by the Saints staff were both season highs as St. Paul dropped just their second series of the season.

Kramer Sneed entered the ballgame having allowed just three runs over his last 28.2 innings pitched, but could not continue the form set in his last four starts. The Canaries rattled off five hits in a row to start the ballgame, all singles, but managed just one run on a David Bergin base hit that gave the Birds an early 1-0 lead.

In the third inning, all it took was two pitches from Sneed for the Canaries to extend their lead to 3-0 as the Saints gave up back-to-back home runs for the first time all season with Jason Repko and Jerome Pena going deep for Sioux Falls. The Saints answered back in the home half with a two out solo homer by Alonzo Harris, his 10th of the season to make it 3-1

The Canaries got two hits in a row to start off the fourth, a single by Angel Chavez, who came around to score on a throwing error by Nate Hanson after Cody Bishop reached on an infield single. Chris Grayson stayed hot against the Saints with an RBI single with two outs that made it 5-1 Canaries.

The Saints would answer with a run of their own in the bottom frame after three straight two out hits, capped off by an RBI double by Steve Nikorak that trimmed the lead to 5-2. It was the only inning the Saints were able to string together multiple hits, but all came with two outs and produced just the one run.

The Sioux Falls offense notched their third two spot in a row in the fifth inning with a pair of doubles that would ultimately end Sneed's evening. Brian Humphries smacked a two bagger to right with one out before being driven in on a single by Steve Sulcoski. Brett Balkan drove in a run with a two out double to left that gave the Canaries a 7-2 lead. Kramer Sneed exited after 5.0 innings allowing seven runs, six earned, on 13 hits. He struck out five and walked one Canary batter.

The Saints got their first leadoff runner aboard in the sixth when Vinny DiFazio was hit by Ray Hanson, who made his first start in a Canaries uniform. Nate Hanson would drive in DiFazio on a one out single to center to make it 7-3.

Dylan Chavez worked 2.0 scoreless innings of relief for the Saints before being tagged for three runs in the eighth inning on five straight one out singles that pushed the Canaries to a 10-3 advantage.

The former two-way player at Temple University, Steve Nikorak, toed the rubber for the Saints in the ninth and notched a scoreless frame allowing a hit in just his third professional appearance on the mound.

It was just the fifth time the Saints have dropped back-to-back ballgames this season and the first ever series loss in CHS Field history.

The Saints will next hit the road for seven games, first taking on the Wichita Wingnuts in a three game series starting Monday at 7:05 p.m. at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. The Saints will send out RHP - Jeff Shields (12-2, 3.13) to the mound against RHP Scott Richmond (4-1, 1.60). The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB.
