A Look Ahead: New Year's Day with the Generals
December 29, 2014 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Oshawa Generals News Release
Ring in the New Year with an Oshawa Generals game! This Thursday, Jan. 1 at 2:05 p.m., the Oshawa Generals take to home ice to face the North Bay Battalion for the third time this season, and the first time on home ice.
The North Bay Battalion (16-9-5-1) are a strong contender in the East, currently sitting at third place in the conference with 38 points. Left winger, Nick Paul is the top scorer for the Battalion with 34 points (19 goals, 15 assists) in 27 games played. Paul was drafted to the Dallas Stars 101st overall at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft and was then acquired by the Ottawa Senators, signing a three-year entry-level contract with the club just last week. In addition, Paul was named to Team Canada and is currently participating at the 2015 IIHF World Junior Championship, meaning he will not be on the ice this Thursday at the GM Centre.
You will want to watch out for Mike Amadio, an 18-year-old playing his third season with the Battalion. Amadio was selected 90th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft by the Los Angeles Kings. Battalion veteran and overager, Brenden Miller is playing his fifth season with the Battalion. This defender has racked up 31 points (10 goals, 21 assists) this season and is most definitely a player to look out for today. Battalion defender, Jake Smith has played 26 games in goal this season and sits fourth in the league on the list of top goaltenders. With a goals against average of 2.47 and three shutouts under his belt this season, Smith is sure to make things more difficult for the Generals.
Despite the Battalion having a slew of strong players, the Generals have defeated the Battalion in both of their earlier matchups this season. The first meeting of these two teams was back on Oct. 23. Hunter Smith and Tobias Lindberg scored the two Generals goals that night and the game ended in a final score of 2-1. 15 penalties were handed out throughout the game, likely as a result of some unresolved tension from the Eastern Conference finals last season. On Friday, Dec. 19, the Generals journeyed back to North Bay looking for another win, which they found after scoring five unanswered goals against the Battalion. Although the Generals were outshot 27-25, goals scored by Desrocher, Turner, Harding, Pu, and Smith allowed the Generals to take home the win for the second time in North Bay this season.
If you haven't heard yet, the Oshawa Generals are having quite the season. There isn't a player you'll want to miss at this game as they are all certain to make an impact. Michael Dal Colle leads the Generals in scoring with 48 points (22 goals, 26 assists). Tobias Lindberg follows closely behind with 42 points (15 goals, 27 assists) following a three-point game on Sunday night against Peterborough. Cole Cassels returns to the Generals line-up on Thursday following a 10 game suspension and looks to tally a few more points for the team. The Oshawa Generals (27-4-1-0) currently sit at first place in the Ontario Hockey League with 55 points and there's no better way to welcome 2015 than with a great game of hockey.
