Oshawa Generals News Release
The Generals had a hot start in their first game back following Christmas holidays. The Generals took on the Peterborough Petes for the third time this season and came out victorious for the third time with a 5-4 win over the Petes.
The Generals dominated the first period physically and in skill, opening the scoring at only 3:29 in the first. Cliff Pu scored his second goal of the season, assisted by Joe Manchurek. For the remainder of the period, the Generals spent a great amount of time in the Petes end, putting rookie goaltender, Dylan Wells to work. At 17:49, Timms of the Petes was given the first penalty of the game for high sticking. The Generals took advantage of the power play and Tobias Lindberg scored the second Generals goal of the night, assisted by Dal Colle and Vande Sompel. The goal marked Lindberg's 40th point of the season. The Generals again showed why they have the best power play in the league, demonstrating phenomenal puck movement and reacting quickly to any defensive plays against them. The period ended with the Generals outshooting the Petes 16-8 and leading the score 2-0.
Despite the Generals strong start, Peterborough had a strong second period and came out fighting. Hunter Garlent put one past Appleby at only 1:36, assisted by Varga. First period goal scorer, Lindberg was sent to the penalty box on a cross checking call at 4:43 and the Petes took advantage of the opportunity. Garlent scored his second of the game, this time assisted by MacDonald and Spencer, tying the game 2-2. Less than a minute later however, the Generals came right back and Michael Dal Colle earned his second point of the night with a goal assisted by Cirelli and Sterk. The Generals faced two more penalties in the period, two minutes to Manchurek for tripping and two to Turner for hooking. Josh Brown literally threw his body around during the Petes power plays and helped prevent any scoring chances. With just over a minute to go in the second, the Petes tied things up once again with a goal scored by Greg Betzold, assisted by Stefano. The shots remained in favour of the Generals, dominating 13-3 in the second period.
Intensity was in the air for the majority of the third period as both teams were looking for the lead. It would be Tobias Lindberg who scored the fourth goal for the Generals, his second of the night, assisted by Harding and Carlisle. The goal came around the five minute mark in the period. Despite things getting chippy between these rival teams, no penalties were handed out until much later in the period. At 13:11, Mitchell Vande Sompel scored the fifth Generals goal of the game, giving the team a two goal advantage over the Petes. A couple minutes later however, Dal Colle was sent to the penalty box for interference and the Petes were looking for a comeback. Betzold scored his second goal of the game on the power play and narrowed the Generals lead to only one goal. It was Peterborough's McCartney who was sent to the penalty box at 17:08 for cross checking and the Petes chances at a comeback seemed slim. The clock expired and the Generals took the game 5-4. Shots were more even during the third with the Generals only outshooting the Petes 10-9. Kenny Appleby continued to prove why he is an asset to the team making save after save during the game and preventing a number of goals, earning him first star of the game. Tobias Lindberg was given first star following an impressive two goals and one assist tonight.
