West Michigan Whitecaps News Release

COMSTOCK PARK - Matt Joyce hit a two-run homer in the sixth inning to provide the winning margin in the Whitecaps 3-2 win over Fort Wayne. Matt O'Brien earned his first win as a Whitecap while the pitching staff did not allow an earned run.

Joyce drove in all three West Michigan runs. Will Rhymes scored when Joyce hit into a fielder's choice play on a ground ball in the first inning.

O'Brien retired nine of the first ten Fort Wayne batters in the game. However, Mike Sansoe reached base on an error to lead off the fourth. He eventually scored on a wild pitch to tie the game, 1-1. Later in the inning, Mike Baxter doubled with two outs and scored on a single by Seth Johnston to give the Wizards the lead.

At exactly two hours in length, it was the fastest nine-inning game for the Whitecaps since Ramon Garcia pitched a one hit shutout against South Bend in 1 hour, 50 minutes on May 23.

O'Brien pitched six innings and followed by two shutout innings from Matt Rusch and a perfect ninth by Anthony Claggett who earned his 10th save of the season.

Greg Burke took the loss for Fort Wayne despite seven innings pitched, no walks and six hits allowed.

No walks were issued in the game by either pitching staff.
