Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - After their various comebacks fell short last night, the Kane County Cougars battled back again Friday night and, this time, grabbed a lead and beat the Burlington Bees 8-4 in front of 10,763 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. The Cougars delivered six different run-scoring hits with two outs, three of which came from Chad Boyd. Steve Kleen also scored four times and homered to help a 14-hit Kane County attack.

Kleen's homer came in the second inning against Bees starter Matt Kniginyzky and tied the game, 1-1. Burlington scored three in the fifth against Joe Piekarz, who allowed four runs on nine hits over seven innings, walked one and fanned four. The southpaw left in line for a loss but was taken off the hook by a three-run Cougars rally in the seventh against Rayner Oliveros.

Down 4-2, the Cougars got a run-scoring grounder from Matt Sulentic and two-out RBI singles from Boyd and Anthony Recker for a 5-4 lead, the team's first advantage in the series. Three more runs arrived in the eighth against Cody Harkcom, as Sulentic cracked a two-run double and Boyd smacked another single to make it 8-4.

Piekarz (8-6) recorded his third win against the Bees this season, and Joel Posey saved his first game with two scoreless relief innings. Oliveros (6-4) suffered the loss.

The Cougars (36-24) and Bees (24-36) now shift the series to Iowa for a game Saturday night at 7 CT. Kenny Durost (0-0, 3.86) will pitch against Luke Hochevar (0-0, 0.00), the first overall pick in the 2006 draft.
