Sacramento River Cats News Release

LAS VEGAS, Nev. - The Sacramento River Cats scored five runs in the top of the first inning, but saw their lead evaporate on Saturday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. The Las Vegas Aviators scored eight of the final nine runs of the game on their way to a 10-8 win over Sacramento to take the lead in the six-game series, with Sacramento having a chance to split the set on Sunday in the finale.

The River Cats scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by David Villar in the top of the first. Joey Bart came up next and hit his second home run in as many games a two-run blast to make it 3-0. After Luis Gonzalez singled, John Camargo came up for the first time as a Giants farmhand and delivered a two-run homer to left to make it a 5-0 advantage.

Las Vegas got two runs back in the bottom of the first on back-to-back two-out singles from Yohel Pozo and Conner Capel that made it a 5-2 contest. The River Cats returned fire in the top of the second as Jakson Reetz homered on the first pitch of the inning. With one out, Tyler Fitzgerald and Casey Schmitt hit back-to-back doubles to get the lead back to five runs at 7-2.

Aviators' starter Kyle Muller would work into the sixth inning and leave with the bases loaded and nobody out. Danny Jimenez (1-0) would be summoned from the bullpen and get back-to-back strikeouts of Schmitt and Villar and then get Bart to fly out to end the inning and escape unscathed.

Muller went five-plus innings and allowed seven runs on 11 hits while striking out five. Jimenez would pick up the victory in a scoreless 1 1/3 innings.

River Cats starter Kai-Wei Teng gave up two runs in the second on an RBI single by Tyler Wade and a sac-fly by Trenton Brooks. Teng allowed two more runs in the third on a homer by Greg Deichmann and a two-out RBI double by Wade that cut the River Cats lead to 7-6.

Teng did not factor into the decision as he went four innings and allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out five.

Las Vegas took the lead for good in the sixth. With one out, Darell Hernaiz singled and Kevin Smith followed with his second home run in as many games, a two-run blast that put the Aviators in front for the first time, 8-7. The Aviators added a run on a two-out single by Capel later in the inning to make it 9-7.

The three runs in the sixth inning were allowed by Nick Swiney (0-1), who allowed three runs on five hits in two innings of relief.

Las Vegas added a run in the eighth when Hernaiz scored from third on a two-out fielding error committed by Camargo that made it a 10-7 contest.

Sacramento scored a run in the ninth on a two-out RBI single by Camargo to make it 10-8. Armando Alvarez came to the plate as the tying run but struck out swinging facing Spencer Patton (SV, 5), who earned the save in the game for Las Vegas.

The River Cats and Aviators wrap up their series on Sunday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. Sean Hjelle (2-5, 6.22 ERA) makes the start for Sacramento, opposed by right-hander Spenser Watkins (0-0, 0.00 ERA) for Las Vegas. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. PDT.
