Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Tacoma, WA - The Tacoma Rainiers (60-53, 23-15) rode early offense to a 5-1 win over the Oklahoma City Dodgers (73-38, 23-15) on Saturday at Cheney Stadium, clinching their third consecutive series win. With the victory, the Rainiers have won nine of 10 at home and 13 of 16 overall. Seven games over .500 also matches Tacoma's high-water mark for the season.
Riley Unroe opened the scoring for Tacoma in the second inning, singling home Adam Engel (walk) to give the Rainiers an early 1-0 advantage. Two batters later, a Ryan Bliss hit-by-pitch forced in Robbie Tenerowicz (fielder's choice), doubling the lead. An RBI single from Zach DeLoach (2 H) and a sacrifice fly from Taylor Trammell put the finishing touches on a four-run frame. Catcher Pedro Severino had a game-high three hits, and singled and scored in the second.
The Rainiers extended their cushion in the third, thanks to a 106.8 MPH blast to left for Engel (13) - his second homer in three games - bringing the score to 5-0. With five runs in the first three innings on Saturday, Tacoma continued its early dominance, and have outscored OKC 32-8 in innings one through three in the clubs' first seven meetings this season.
David Dahl got the Dodgers on the board in the seventh, launching a solo shot (8) to left-center field, his third homer of the series. With the blast, OKC's last nine runs have come via the long ball (their past seven runs via solo homers) dating to the Rainiers' 4-3 win on Thursday.
It was another productive day for the Tacoma offense, with eight players reaching base and five driving in runs. Also of note; with two walks, Trammell extended his on-base streak to 20 games, which began on July 5at Reno.
Tacoma lefty Tommy Milone retired the first 14 OKC Dodgers he faced. Milone delivered 5.2 scoreless frames, surrendering only two hits and two walks while striking out four. The Rainiers have now won Milone's last nine starts (13-3 this season). Reliever Stephen Kolek continued his run of success (two runs allowed over his past 23.2 IP), pitching 1.1 perfect innings. Riley O'Brien closed the door in the ninth, striking out one in the process.
For OKC, the Dodger bullpen was stellar, scattering two hits and a walk over four scoreless frames. Jimmy Nelson (MLB rehab) recorded a strikeout in his inning of work, while Kyle Hurt punched out seven during three innings of relief.
The Rainiers will conclude this homestand against Oklahoma City on Sunday, with first pitch slated for 1:35 PT at Cheney Stadium. LHP Logan Allen will get the ball for Tacoma; OKC will counter with RHP Ryan Pepiot.
