
9,255 Fans See Iowa Fall 5-2 in Home Opener

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Wild (0-1-0-0, 0 points) were defeated by the Milwaukee Admirals (1-0-0-0, 2 points) 5-2 in front of 9,255 fans on Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Milwaukee forwards Emil Petterson, Trevor Smith and Bobby Butler each tallied a goal and an assist to help lead the Admirals to victory over the Wild. Admirals goalie Anders Lindback (1-0-0) made 23 saves in the win. Wild goalie Niklas Svedberg (0-1-0) made 20 saves in the defeat. Wild forwards Gerald Mayhew and Cal O'Reilly each scored a goal in the loss. Iowa's Zack Mitchell became the second player in team history to reach 100 career points with an assist. Iowa and Milwaukee faceoff again on Sunday at 5 p.m.
After a scoreless first period, Milwaukee opened the scoring at 5:48 of second period. Rookie forward Yakov Trenin gave the Admirals the 1-0 lead. Trenin's first goal of the season was assisted by forward Frederick Gaudreau and defenseman Alexandre Carrier. Gaudreau centered the puck to Trenin who lifted it over the right pad of Iowa goalie Svedberg. Forward Emil Petterson scored his first goal of the season at 10:04 of the middle frame, extending Milwaukee's lead to 2-0. The shorthanded goal was set up by by forward Harry Zolnierczyk. After an Iowa turnover at the Milwaukee blueline, Petterson carried the puck through the Wild zone and scored from the left-wing circle. At 12:39 of the period, Iowa forward Gerald Mayhew scored his first goal of the season, making it a 2-1 game. The goal was set up by defenseman Nick Seeler and forward Zack Mitchell. Mayhew shot the puck from the left-wing circle to beat Lindback on the stick side. Mitchell recorded his 100th career point with the assist.
Admirals forward Anthony Richard extended Milwaukee's lead to 3-1 at 5:14 of the third period. Richard's first goal of the season was assisted by forward Vladislav Kamenev, as well as defenseman Andrew O'Brien. Richard shot the puck from behind the net and banked it off the back of Svedberg's leg. At 13:44 of the third period, Admirals forward Bobby Butler scored his first goal of the season. The power-play goal was set up by forwards Trevor Smith and Petterson. Butler's wrist shot from the left-wing circle made it a 4-1 game. At 15:26 of the third period, Iowa forward Cal O'Reilly scored his first goal of the season. The shorthanded goal was set up by forward Landon Ferraro. O'Reilly shot in the rebound to extend Milwaukee's lead to 4-2. Smith scored his first goal of the season at 19:06 of the third period. The empty-net goal was set up by Butler to make it a 5-2 final score in favor of the Admirals.
Iowa welcomes Milwaukee again on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 5 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. It's Kids Fall Festival night. The first 1,500 fans to arrive at the game receive an Iowa Wild cling schedule sponsored by BUS 100.3 and Hicklin Garage. Fans may bring in a Subway receipt and purchase a ticket for only $5. The Subway combo pack is also available for purchase at the game. There is a postgame skate following the conclusion of the game presented by Smock Industries and NASH Icon.
Iowa takes on the Ontario Reign on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. at Wells Fargo Arena. It is Bus Beer night. It is a $2 beer night presented by 100.3 The Bus. The first 1,500 fans to arrive at the game receive an Iowa Wild poster schedule sponsored by TS Construction, KXNO, Edwards Printing and Napa Auto Parts. There is also a costume for kids drive at the game presented by LAZER 103.3. Fans who donate receive a free weekday ticket voucher.
The Iowa Wild 2017-18 season is presented by Mercy Medical Center: and runs from October through April. Fans may purchase seats to see any of the team's 38 regular season home games at Wells Fargo Arena.
