TEAM NOTES

Off and Running: This marks the third time in eight AHL seasons that the Checkers have started a season 2-0-0, making them one of six AHL teams with that record. The franchise record to start a season is 3-0-0, which was set in 2015-16.

Foegele Takes Flight: Rookie Warren Foegele scored two goals in each of his first two professional games last weekend, including the game-winning goal with one minute remaining in regulation on Friday and a pair of shorthanded tallies on Saturday. He is tied with one other player for the AHL lead in goal scoring (four) heading into this weekend. Foegele earned the Wayne Gretzky Award as MVP of the Ontario Hockey League playoffs to conclude his junior career this past spring.

Offensive Explosion: The Checkers scored five goals in each of their first two games, with their total of 10 marking their highest-ever total through the first two games of a season. They are currently tied for second in the league in goal scoring behind Texas (12).

Home Sweet Home: Charlotte set a franchise record for home victories with a 27-10-1 record at Bojangles' Coliseum last season.

On the Roster: The Checkers return 14 players from last season, including their top seven scorers and five of the six defensemen who played together for the second half of last season.

Behind the Bench: Mike Vellucci is in his first season with the Checkers and fourth as the assistant general manager of the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes. This marks the first professional coaching position for Vellucci, who guided the OHL's Plymouth Whalers at the junior level to a 468-322-36 record over 14 seasons.

New Opponents: The Checkers, who recently moved to the Eastern Conference, did not play any of their 2017-18 opponents last season. They have not played Bridgeport (top affiliate of the New York Rangers) since going 4-0-0 in the 2010-11 season series between the two clubs.
