Raptors 905 (5-8), the NBA G League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, fell to the Maine Celtics (9-5) 100-106 in a hard-fought game Friday evening. The 905 were led by Raptors' assignee Justin Champagnie's 25-point, 13-rebound double-double. The Celtics were led by Luka Samanic who put up a 24-point, 16-rebound performance.
The two teams opened the ball games exchanging baskets, the Celtics' shooting gave them the five-point advantage going into the second quarter. The 905's pressure defense forced the Celtics into 10 turnovers in the opening quarter. Maine was able to find their rhythm early in the second quarter, extending their lead to 10 going into the half. The Celtics continued their hot shooting in the second as they connected on 60% of their field goals, and 50% of their three-point attempts.
Down 10 to open the half, the 905 fought back in the third going on a 15-4 run to tie the game at 68. The visitors went on to outscore the home side 33-29 in the quarter, bringing the game within four going into the final frame.
The 905 attempted to build off their momentum as they kept the game close in the fourth. However, a late 10-0 run from the Celtics secured the win for Maine.
The 905 received complementary scoring from Jeff Dowtin Jr. who added 23 points, five rebounds, three assists, and one steal. Mfiondu Kabengele paced the Celtics putting up 18 points, nine rebounds, five assists, and two blocks in the match.
The two teams meet again to complete their showcase cup series, Sunday, tip-off scheduled for 1:00 pm.
