67's Hang on to Beat Generals
November 14, 2021 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Ottawa 67's News Release
Faced with a late, extended penalty kill, the Ottawa 67's were able to survive with a 7-5 win over the Oshawa Generals.
Vsevolod Gaidamak and Adam Varga notched two goals apiece, with Cam Tolnai and Dylan Robinson also chiming in, while Vinzenz Rohrer tallied the eventual game-winner in the third period. Will Cranley came up big for his team in goal, once again, stopping 30 of 35 Oshawa shots.
The Generals opened the scoring with a Ty Tullio powerplay marker, but Gaidamak answered for the 67's less than three minutes later, with a powerplay goal of his own. A pass from Tolnai found him in the slot, and the Russian import roofed a backhand shot for his tenth of the year, tying the game at 1-1.
Early in the second frame, Varga took a quick pass from Teddy Sawyer, and rifled a quick shot past Patrick Leaver for Ottawa's first lead of the night. Oshawa responded with a goal from Ryan Stepien at the 13:43 mark, but the remainder of the frame would be all Barber Poles.
In the span of 117 seconds, Varga potted his second of the game on a two-on-one with Gaidamak. Then, another odd man rush saw Brenden Sirizzotti set Tolnai up with a wide open net, making it 4-2 Ottawa, before Brady Stonehouse found Robinson all alone in front of the Oshawa goal, and he made no mistake for a three-goal lead.
Thomas Stewart got one back for the Generals early in the third, but a deflection by Rohrer on the powerplay made it 6-3 Barber Poles, at the 7:46 mark.
With just over 11 minutes to play, however, Thomas Johnston was assessed a match penalty on a play that the officials deemed to be a slewfoot, and the Generals were set up with a five-minute powerplay. They received goals from Lleyton Moore and Brett Harrison, making it a 6-5 game as time wound down.
In the final minute, though, with Leaver pulled for the extra attacker, Gaidamak stole the puck at the Ottawa blue line, and streaked in alone on the empty-net, with his second of the night icing this game, and sealing a 7-5 victory for the 67's.
Game Notes:
Vsevolod Gaidamak's third multi-goal game of the season gives him 11 on the year, tying him for the team lead with Jack Beck.
Cam Tolnai now leads the 67's with 19 points.
The 67's are now atop the OHL Eastern Conference with 21 points.
Rohrer's goal was the first game-winner of his career.
Up Next: The 67's are in North Bay to face the Battalion, Thursday night. Puck drop is set for 7:00pm EST.
