Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Rancho Cucamonga. CA- The Inland Empire 66ers grabbed a 5-0 lead over the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes on Saturday at LoanMart Field and then hung on for a 5-4 series-opening win. The victory marked only the second time in 11 tries that Inland Empire (19-37) has defeated the Quakes (33-23) this season.
Quakes starter Grant Holmes and Sixers starter Alex Klonowski were locked in a scoreless duel until the fourth when Inland Empire got to Holmes (4-3). Zach Welz opened the inning with a crisp single to left. Hutton Moyer then walked and Taylor Ward laid down a sac bunt but reached on a throwing error to load the bases. Michael Strentz followed and was hit by a pitch from Holmes giving the Sixers a 1-0 lead. Zach Houchins then reached on an RBI fielder's choice to make it 2-0. Jeff Boehm then singled in a run and Ryan Sebra's RBI ground-out made it 4-0. The Sixers added another run in the fifth when Tim Arakawa reached on an infield hit, his second hit of the game. He then scored from first on Welz' RBI double making it 5-0. Welz finished the contest with his first three-hit game of the season with Inland Empire.
Klonowski (4-6) held the Quakes down until bottom of the sixth but Rancho shortstop Erick Mejia drilled a two-run homer, his second, to make it 5-2. Klonowski finished the night going six frames with two runs allowed on three hits with a walk and six Ks. The Quakes made it 5-4 in the seventh off IE reliever Ronnie Muck who allowed a two-RBI triple from Jordan Tarsovich. Inland Empire turned the ball over to righty Adam Hofacket in the eighth and the Corona native did the job with a scoreless inning. He then walked Joey Curletta to lead off the ninth but stranded him at first after retiring the next three men in order to earn his second save.
The series continues Sunday at 2:05 pm. It can be heard live at 66ers.com.
