Rancho Cucamonga Quakes News Release
Rancho Cucamonga, CA - The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes evened their series against Inland Empire, beating the 66ers 4-2 on Sunday afternoon at LoanMart Field, staying within one game of the lead in the South Division standings.
The Quakes had 10 hits and four players tallied multi-hit games, as Sunday was the first time in five games that Rancho Cucamonga out-hit their opponent.
The Quakes scored first against 66ers starting pitcher Garrett Nuss, who made his first start of the year after being on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. In the second inning, Devan Ahart walked with two outs, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Erick Mejia then ripped a single into center field for a base hit, scoring Ahart to make it 1-0.
The game stayed that way until the fifth, when Rancho Cucamonga added to their lead. Matt Beaty singled with one out, and advanced to second on a single by Edwin Rios. Then, the bright Southern California sun came into play, as Yusniel Diaz hit a routine fly ball to right field, but right fielder Michael Strentz lost the ball in the sun, as it dropped in for a single and scored Beaty, making it 2-0 Quakes. On the play, Rios was thrown out at the plate to end the inning.
Rancho Cucamonga scored two runs in the sixth. With two out, Ahart singled and moved to second base on a passed ball. Mejia then knocked home Ahart with an RBI single, his fourth RBI of the series, to make it 3-0 Quakes. After taking second on the throw home, Mejia scored on a Tim Locastro single that made it 4-0 after six innings.
Inland Empire cut into their deficit in the seventh inning. Working against Quakes reliever Phillip Pfeifer, the 66ers scored two runs after Ayendy Perez hit an infield single with the bases loaded, and Tim Arakwa worked a bases-loaded walk that cut the lead in half and made it 4-2. That's as close as the 66ers came as Rancho went on to win game two of the series.
Ahart, Locastro, Mejia and Beaty all had multi-hit games for Rancho Cucamonga. The Quakes were also 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position, which is their best mark for a game on this home stand.
Quakes' starter Yaisel Sierra (3-3), celebrated his 25th birthday by picking up his first win since May 16th. He pitched five innings, and allowed just one hit and no earned runs. He walked two and struck out six. Phillip Pfeifer allowed two runs in his two innings of work, while Chris Anderson threw a scoreless eighth inning and Karch Kowalczyk nailed down his sixth save with a scoreless ninth.
Nuss (0-1) was charged with the loss in his first start of the season, after pitching four innings, and allowing just one earned run on four hits. He walked three and struck out five. Eric Alonzo allowed three runs (one earned) in his two innings of work, and former major leaguer Josh Roenicke, who is reinventing himself as a sidearm pitcher, pitched two scoreless innings.
Rancho Cucamonga (34-23), keeps pace with the High Desert Mavericks, who won today at Lake Elsinore, to stay one game back in the South Division. Inland Empire drops to 19-38 with the loss. Rancho Cucamonga is now 10-2 against Inland Empire this season and 4-1 against the 66ers at LoanMart Field.
Rancho Cucamonga's home stand continues on Monday night when the Quakes take on the Inland Empire 66ers, who are expected to have Angels' shortstop Andrelton Simmons in uniform as part of a rehab assignment. First pitch of game three of the four-game series is at 7:05 p.m. It'll be another Social Media Monday, as fans that follow the Quakes on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat and like the Quakes Facebook page can take part in contests on the field and win great prizes as part of Social Media Monday. Tickets are available at (909) 481-5000 or rcquakes.com.
