Bakersfield Blaze News Release
Victories aren't always pretty and on Saturday night, it didn't need to be. For the third time on their 7-game road trip, Joe DeCarlo played the hero by smacking a two-run homer in the third inning to help the Bakersfield Blaze (27-28) beat the San Jose Giants (33-22), 2-1.
DeCarlo provided all the necessary offense for Bakersfield as they used four pitchers to limit San Jose to a measly one hit.
Lukas Schiraldi had another roller coaster affair lasting just four innings, striking out seven, walking six, hitting a batter, and throwing six wild pitches. One of his wild throws was on a strikeout of Steven Duggar in the opening frame that led to the only run of the game for the Giants.
After his second wild pitch and a fly out, Jonah Arrenado singled home Duggar from thrid base to give the Giants an early 1-0 lead. The run and hit were all the offense San Jose could muster as Aaron Brooks (W, 3-1) pitched three flawless innings and Kyle Schepel (S, 6) picked up another save on the road trip.
The win gives Bakersfield their longest winning streak of the season at five games and also inches them closer to the .500 mark. With plenty of time still left in the first half of the season, the Blaze are now in hot pursuit of the Giants and Visalia Rawhide.
Unlike the first two games in Stockton, Joe DeCarlo didn't let the drama build in order to give his team the lead. Austin Wilson led the third inning off and was hit by a Martin Agosta (L, 3-1) fastball in the back and that led to DeCarlo's deep drive. Agosta missed with an inside fastball that DeCarlo turned on and hit over the left field wall to give the Blaze it's 2-1 advantage.
With Lukas Schiraldi's lack of control, Manager Eddie Menchaca wasted little time in going to his relievers. Brooks, Thyago Vieira, and Schepel struck out four batters and walked just three.
The win was Bakerfield's first over San Jose in four tries and they have now won nine of their last 11 road games.
Game 2 is Sunday and first pitch from San Jose is at 1:00pm. David Gascon will have the call on TuneInRadio and BakersfieldBlaze.com
