Inland Empire 66ers News Release
Adelanto, CA- The Inland Empire 66ers hung on and earned their first win of the season at High Desert with a 9-7 win on Friday at Heritage Field. The Sixers were 0-8 on the season prior to Friday but got homers from Taylor Ward and Zach Houchins and held off a late High Desert rally as Sam Holland tossed a perfect ninth to earn his second save of the year.
The 66ers (44-81, 21-34) jumped out in first on a pair of unearned runs when Mavs' RF Jairo Beras misplayed a ball. Beras atoned with a solo shot in the second, his 22nd of the year to make it 2-1. Luke Tendler then took Sixers' starter Jeremy Rhoades deep in the third with his 21st homer of the year, a two run shot to make it 3-2 HD. The lead did not last as Rhoades (5-12) settled down and did not allow another run.
The Sixers took a 4-3 lead when Ward tagged his 7th homer of the year and third in the last two days. Houchins delivered his three-run shot in the fifth to make it a four-run inning and an 8-3 lead. Houchins leads the club with 15 homers. Ward added a RBI in the seventh on a sac fly scoring Jared Foster who had tripled earlier in the inning.
The Mavs (73-51, 30-24) battled back with three runs in the seventh and another in the eighth to make it 9-7. Holland came in however and iced the game with a flyout and a pair of strikeouts in a perfect bottom of the ninth. Brett Martin fell to 0-1 for the Mavs on the mound.
The series continues Saturday at 7:05 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com and 1570 AM KPRO. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
