SAN JOSE, CA - Rancho Cucamonga starting pitcher Tim Shibuya tossed seven scoreless innings in a 6-0 Quakes shutout win on Friday night at Municipal Stadium. The Giants (64-61) were held without a hit after the fifth inning on their way to the series-opening loss.

Robbie Garvey (2-for-3) had a pair of singles and Jonah Arenado (1-for-4) extended his hitting streak to 16 games for San Jose in defeat. All six of the Giants' hits in the contest were singles.

Rancho Cucamonga jumped out early scoring twice in the top of the second against San Jose starter Mark Reyes to take a 2-0 lead. Michael Ahmed began the inning by driving an 0-2 pitch from Reyes over the fence in left for a solo home run. The homer was Ahmed's 16th of the season. Brandon Trinkwon followed with a single before taking second on a wild pitch. Then with two down, Dian Toscano tripled into right center plating Trinkwon with the second run of the frame. A walk and a hit by pitch then loaded the bases, but Reyes prevented further damage when he retired Johan Mieses on a groundout to end the inning.

Trailing 2-0, the Giants threatened in the bottom of the third against Shibuya. Back-to-back one-out singles from T.J. Bennett and Garvey put runners on first and second. However, Ronnie Jebavy flied out to the warning track in left and Rando Moreno grounded out back to the mound as both runners were stranded.

Consecutive walks issued by Reyes to begin the top of the fourth ended the night for the San Jose starter. Dusten Knight was summoned from the bullpen and he promptly allowed a single to Noah Perio to load the bases. Mieses then flied out to shallow left, but Yusniel Diaz followed with a line drive into the right center field gap for a two-run double and a 4-0 Quakes lead.

Reyes (8-8) lost his fourth consecutive start after he was charged with four runs (all earned) on five hits over three-plus innings. He walked four and struck out four.

Still down by four runs, the Giants loaded the bases against Shibuya in the bottom of the fifth, but were unable to score. After the first two batters of the inning were retired, Garvey and Jebavy produced back-to-back singles. Moreno then walked to load the bases. Dylan Davis was up next, but on the ninth pitch of his at-bat he flied out to right ending the inning.

Meanwhile, Knight (4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 6 SO) worked three straight 1-2-3 innings from the fifth through the seventh. The right-hander set down 11 consecutive Rancho Cucamonga hitters to end his outing.

Shibuya pitched around an error in the bottom of the sixth before a perfect seventh inning to maintain the 4-0 Quakes advantage. Rancho Cucamonga reliever Kevin Brown then cruised through a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth.

In the ninth, the Quakes plated two runs against Carlos Diaz (2 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 1 SO) to extend their lead to 6-0. With two outs, Ahmed delivered an RBI double before Trinkwon's RBI single capped the scoring for the night.

Brown finished the game for Rancho Cucamonga with a perfect bottom of the ninth.

Shibuya (2-0) allowed six hits during his seven-inning performance. The right-hander walked one, struck out four and threw 103 pitches.
