Lancaster JetHawks News Release
LAKE ELSINORE, Calif. - The JetHawks took an early lead and held on late for a 6-3 win, the club's 70th of the season, against the Lake Elsinore Storm on Friday night at The Diamond.
The victory ensured the JetHawks (70-54, 35-19) of a .500-or-better record this season, marking the franchise's record fifth-straight season without a losing record. The club also extended its lead in the second half to five games over High Desert, who fell to Inland Empire, and 5.5 games over Lake Elsinore (62-63, 30-25) with 16 games to play.
Brock Dykxhoorn (9-4) picked up the win to match teammate Josh James for the team-lead with nine wins. He allowed an unearned run in the bottom of the second inning, but the JetHawks quickly put the right-hander ahead with two runs in the third.
Myles Straw reached base on a single with two outs in the third inning to start a string of four-straight hits for the JetHawks. Osvaldo Duarte and Bryan Muniz each picked up RBIs with their hits.
Lancaster added to its lead in the fifth against Lancaster-native Jerry Keel (2-2). Duarte reached base on a single and advanced when Muniz reached on an error. Jamie Ritchie followed with an RBI-single and Muniz later scored on a Jason Martin ground ball.
Keel took the loss, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over five innings.
Dykxhoorn ran into trouble in the fifth inning as well. Chase Jensen, who led the Storm with three hits, doubled with one out and scored on a Michael Gettys hit. Gettys advanced to third on Taylor Kohlwey's single to right field and scored on a Luis Urias grounder. Dykxhoorn was able to strand the potential tying run at third base to end his night. He allowed three runs (two earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. He did not issue a walk.
Alex Winkelman and Ryan Deemes combined for four scoreless innings out of the bullpen to finish the game. The Storm's best chance to tie or take the lead came in the seventh. Jensen and Gettys singled against Winkelman before Deemes came on to pitch with two on and two outs. He walked Urias to load the bases before enducing an inning-ending grounder to shortstop.
Trent Woodward provided some insurance with a two-run double in the top of the ninth and Deemes shut the door to pick up his sixth save.
The JetHawks continue the three-game series in Lake Elsinore on Saturday. Elieser Hernandez (2-4) will start against Chris Huffman (9-5). First pitch is 6 p.m.
