66er Bats Stymied for a Second Night in a Row
April 20, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Bernardino, CA- Yohander Mendez (2-0) pitched six scoreless innings en route to a 7-1 Mavericks (10-4) victory over the 66ers (2-11). Over his six innings of work, Mendez struck out for four batters only allowing two hits. The loss gave High Desert a second straight series victory over Inland Empire.
High Desert dashed any dream of a pitcher's duel in the fifth inning when they scored four runs in the frame. Josh Morgan lead off with a ground ball single to left. 66ers starter Alex Klonowski (0-3) would then walk the bases full by issuing free passes to Michael De Leon and Travis Demeritte. Luke Tendler would then knock the 66ers starting pitcher out of the game with a line drive double to right field that would clear the bases. Tendler, who advanced on the throw, would score later on in the frame to make the lead 4-0.
The Mavericks were at it again in the seventh. With Brian Loconsole pitching, Michael De Leon walked, then advanced to third on a Tendler single. A Scott Heineman ground out would score De Leon and advance Tendler. The run allowed, which chased Loconsole from the game, was the first run the Geneva, Illinois native allowed this season. Keynan Middleton would then come into the game and promptly give up a home run to Jairo Beras to cap the night's scoring for the Mavericks.
The 66ers would get a run back in the bottom of the ninth with Mavericks closer Scott Williams on the mound. With two outs, Zach Houchins would double off the base of the left field wall. Michael Strentz would drive Houchins on a shallow bloop hit that got passed center fielder Heineman. Williams would end the game by inducing Trever Allen to pop out in foul territory.
The series concludes Wednesday Night at 7:05pm. Jeremy Rhoades (1-1 4.09 ERA) looks to salvage the series for the 66ers. The Mavericks will counter with 20 year-old Ariel Jurado (1-0 3.00 ERA). First pitch time is 7:05pm and can be heard live on the 66ers radio network through 66ers.com.
