Herb Blazes Through Modesto in Gem

April 20, 2016 - California League (CalL1)
Bakersfield Blaze News Release

Tyler Herb (1-0) didn't get a decision in his first game with Bakersfield this year, but he made sure that would change in his second appearance.

Herb gave up a leadoff triple to Wes Rogers before completely dominating the Modesto Nuts in a 6-2 victory on Tuesday night.

Game 3 is scheduled for Wednesday night at 7:05pm with the Blaze looking to take their second series of the season against the Nuts.

Bakersfield got another tremendous start from Herb with Aaron Brooks and Ryan Horstman making sure the right-hander picked up his first win with the team. The trio of Herb, Brooks, and Horstman were in lockdown mode after the Nuts took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Herb set a new season high for Blaze pitchers by striking out 10 batters in just 5.2 innings worth of work, but he wasn't alone.

Brooks rebounded from a tough outing against Visalia last week to hold the Nuts at bay in the 6th when he relieved Herb and proceeded to strike out Omar Carrizales with two out and two on in the frame. Brooks scattered a couple of hits and did not give up a run in 1.1 innings.

Meanwhile, Ryan Horstman continues to make the opposition look small. Horstman came into the game having struck out 14 batters in just 7.2 innings and on Tuesday he fanned three more in two innings.

The offense also did their part by jumping all over Jesus Tinoco (0-2) for the second straight time. Tinoco was ineffective as he lasted just 4.1 innings after giving up 11 hits, 5 runs, and striking out one.

Not only did six different Blaze hitters recorded a double, but six players had a multi-hit performances. Only one batter in the lineup did not record a hit during the 13-hit onslaught.

Drew Jackson recorded his 5th multi-hit game of the season and Brock Hebert (2-4, 2B, 2R, RBI, BB) jumped his team leading batting average to .343.
