Omaha Storm Chasers News Release
Omaha left fielder Donnie Dewees clubbed three hits, including one a home run, and drove in four runs, with center field Billy Burns and shortstop Nicky Lopez adding back-to-back jacks in the ninth, while Las Vegas designated hitter Bryce Brentz crushed two longballs as both teams combined for nine roundtrippers in the 51s' 12-11 slugfest victory in front of 8,671 fans on Friday night at Werner Park.
At least one run was scored in eight of the nine innings, including a combined 19 tallies through the initial five frames. Along with the 23 runs, nine big flies and 32 knocks, the two teams combined for 20 extra-base hits. 16 of the 18 batters in each of the Las Vegas and Omaha starting lineups recorded a hit and scored a run.
Entering the last of the second down 4-0, Dewees got the Storm Chasers on the board with a opposite field two-run double. After the 51s answered with a two-spot, DH Frank Schwindel smashed his 20th homer of 2018 with a two-run shot to narrow the deficit back to two. 2B Ramon Torres and Dewees later launched solo longballs to even the contest at 6-6 in the fourth.
The fifth inning was the most eventful, seeing a combined seven scores between the two sides. After Las Vegas plated four tallies in the top of the frame C Cam Gallagher lofted a sacrifice fly to center before RF Elier Hernandez 's RBI two-bagger sliced the 51s' advantage to 10-8. Dewees then drove in his fourth run with his third knock of the contest, a single to left to cut the margin to one. Las Vegas, however, would plate single insurance tallies in the seventh and eighth frames, which was just enough to top Omaha after Burns and Nicky Lopez's longballs in the ninth narrowed the deficit to one.
Along with Dewees' (4-5, R, 2 2B, HR, 4 RBI) performance, Schwindel (3-6, 2 R, 2 2B, HR, 2 RBI), Hernandez (3-4, 2 R, 2B, RBI, BB), Burns (2-4, HR, RBI, 2 BB) and Nicky Lopez ((2-4, 2 R, HR, RBI, BB) each posted multi-hit efforts, while Brentz (3-5, 3 R, 2 HR, 3 RBI) was joined by 1B Peter Alonso (3-6, 2 R, 2 2B, HR, 3 RBI), LF Patrick Kivlehan (2-5, R, 2 2B) and RF Zach Borenstein (2-4, 2 R, 2B, 2 BB) in recording two or more knocks for the 51s. Schwindel's pair of two-baggers extended his hit streak to 11.
Las Vegas reliever Ian Krol (2.0 IP, 2 H, 3 K) earned the win by spinning two scoreless frames, with southpaw Buddy Baumann notching the save. Storm Chasers starter Arnaldo Hernandez (4.0 IP, 9 H, 9 R, 8 ER, 2 BB, 3 K) suffered his first Triple-A defeat.
Omaha continues their seven-game homestand by starting a four-game set with the Salt Lake Bees on Saturday evening at Werner Park. First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. CT. The Storm Chasers are expected to give the nod to RHP Zach Lovvorn (1-5, 8.31) and by opposed by Bees RHP Luis Pena (3-3, 6.10) to the hill.
Tickets are still available all Storm Chasers contests throughout the 2018 season, and may be purchased at www.omahastormchasers.com/tickets as well as by calling the Werner Park Ticket Office at (402) 738-5100.
