Reno Aces News Release
Today's Game: Reno saw their season-best seven-game win streak come to an end last night against Colorado Springs. With a new streak in their sights, the Aces begin a four-game series against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. OKC enters with a record of 60-48, two games above 'Springs in the American Northern Division. The Aces are six games back of first place with 28 games left to play.
Last Game: Ildemaro Vargas extended his hit streak to 29 games in the Aces 13-3 loss last night. Jamie Westbrook had a break-out performance, hitting his first two home runs of his Triple-A career. Despite the offensive performances by Westbrook and Vargas, Colorado Springs jumped on Matt Koch early to take the final game of the series. Reno ended their seven-game win streak but walked away with their 16th series win of the season.
Streaking: Ildemaro Vargas has hit in 29 consecutive games, good for the longest hit streak in the Pacific Coast League. During the streak, he is batting .375, (48-for-128), with 21 runs scored, 10 doubles, 11 RBI and an OBP of .429. There have only been five players in Aces history with streaks of 20+ games. Jake Elmore (31, 2012), Ildemaro Vargas (27, 2018), Tony Abreu (24, 2011), Chris Owings (23, 2013), and Ketel Marte (22, 2017). In 2017, Ketel Marte went 37-for-98, .378, with nine 2B, three 3B, one HR and 16 RBI from April 29 through May 22. Joe DiMaggio, then an 18-year old outfielder with the San Francisco Seals, established a new Pacific Coast League record by hitting in 61 consecutive games in 1933.
Streaking Extended: Vargas' 29-game hit streak ties the longest in the Pacific Coast League since Alex Dickerson (ELP) did so in 2016. Since 2009, only two players in the PCL have recorded hit streaks of 30 or more. Jake Elmore (Reno) has the longest with 31 set in 2012 and Anderson Hernandez (OKC) had 30 in 2011.
Potter Baseball: There have been four players with the last name 'Potter' in professional baseball. Dykes Potter (1938), Mike Potter (1976-1977), Nels Potter (1936-1949), Squire Potter (1923). Nels won 92 games in his 12-year career and finished his career with the Boston Braves. He had 627 at-bats, but hit just .228 and never hit a home run.
Sample Size: Harry Potter is considered to be one of the best Quidditch players in history. However, during his six-year Hogwarts career, Harry was limited to just 10 games. In his rookie season, Potter played in the first two matches of the year (Slytherin/Hufflepuff, but was recovering in the hospital wing during the final match against Ravenclaw. His sophomore season looked promising, but the season was canceled due to attacks on Muggle-Borns. The 93-94 season was the only year in which Harry played all three matches, but he was attacked by dementors during the first game against Hufflepuff and spoiled the season.
That's a First: Outfielder Jamie Westbrook made his Aces and Triple-A debut on Thursday night and finished 2-for-4. Last night, in just his second game, he hit two home runs. This season with Double-A Jackson, Westbrook hit .289 in 105 games with 20 doubles, five triples, and 15 home runs. He led the Generals this year in batting average, runs scored (64), Home runs, RBI (68), and total bases (191). He remains the only player for the Generals this season to appear in more than 100 games. Jamie Westbrook's two-homer game for Reno marks only the third time a Reno player has had a two-homer game against the Sky Sox. Other instances: Rusty Ryal, June 12th, 2012 @ COS and Kyle Jensen, June 18th, 2016 in Reno.
Texas League History: On this date in 1971, Tommy Walker threw a 15-inning no-hitter to beat the Albuquerque Dukes, 1-0. The right-hander faced just 47 batters, two over the minimum.
Dubious Honors: Jake Buchanan leads the Pacific Coast League in hits allowed this season (147). He averages seven hits per appearance (20 starts, 1 relief) and has thrown 121.1 innings. Batters are hitting .307 against him and hit .355 when ahead in the count. Jake, however, has been very good since the All-Star break. He's posted a 3-1 record and has an ERA of 2.03.
