Bakersfield Condors News Release
5th Annual Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon:
For 41 straight hours, there was hockey being played in downtown Bakersfield, all to raise money for the fight against breast cancer. Beginning at 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 20, the Condors Fighting Cancer Hockey-Thon kicked off with over 100 participants that each raised a minimum of $250 to compete in the event. When the 41 hours concluded and the dollars were counted, the Hockey-Thon raised a whopping $36,000, bringing the five-year total to $199,000!
The Hockey-Thon, sponsored by KBAK-29, KUZZ 107.9 and Bakersfield Californian, was highlighted with a first-ever Condors Alumni vs. West Coast All-Star Alumni Game, which pitted former Condors against former Fresno Falcons, San Diego Gulls and Long Beach Ice Dogs. The pink and black game-worn jerseys from the alumni game were auctioned off, raising $9,835.
"It was a fabulous event," said Links For Life Executive Director Jennifer Henry. "Thanks to the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center and the Condors for putting on this event, and also to 3Way Chevrolet for their contributions. The funds raised will help women all over the county affected by breast cancer in numerous ways."
Participant Matt Miles was the Hockey-Thon's highest fundraiser, bringing in $1,350. He and the other two highest fundraisers will share 20 tickets and a chartered bus trip to check out the LA Kings in action later this season. Links for Life also set up an auction and raffle table on the concourse during the Condors game on Feb. 22 that featured additional items, such as an autographed Alexander Ovechkin jersey, official Hummer bicycle and an off-roading truck kit.
Condors Collect over a ton of canned food:
Last Tuesday night, the Condors hosted their 11th annual Canned Food Collection prior to the evening's contest against the Alaska Aces. Sponsored by My 45, 106.1 KRAB Radio and Orion Payment Systems, the Condors faithful carried in 2,020 pounds of canned food items to be donated to the Kern County Food Bank and Golden Empire Gleaners.
Tuesday's collection, which was the second highest in Condors history, increases the total amount collected to more than 14,000 pounds of food. The donation helps stock the two food banks as a weakened economy has greatly diminished their food reserves.
"The food bank was somewhat depleted," said Linda Alvarez, Kern County Food Bank Warehouse supervisor. "Your donation of food items will really help the people of Kern County - thank you to everyone involved!"
