HIDALGO, Texas - The Rio Grande Valley Vipers (19-17) topped the Texas Legends (17-17) 113-101 tonight at State Farm Arena. The win moves RGV to second place in the Southwest Division. The Vipers are 8-3 versus Southwest Division opponents this season.
Jaron Johnson scored a double-double 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Vipers. Houston Rockets assignee Sam Dekker also contributed 16 points. Raphiael Putney scored 15 points and 3 blocks. Will Cummings tallied 14 points, followed by Denzel Livingston with 11 points. Jordan Hamilton added 10 points. The Vipers bench scored a combined 51 points.
Tu Holloway led the Legends with 29 points. Micheal Eric scored 17 points. Toure' Murry and Patrick Miller scored 13 points apiece. Jamil Wilson recorded 11 points.
The Legends started the game with a 13-0 run. Johnson made a layup to score the Vipers' first basket of the game. The shot also started a 12-0 run for the Vipers that helped RGV close its deficit to 13-12 with 5:25 remaining in the quarter. Holloway scored 13 of his total 29 points in the first quarter to give the Legends a 32-27 lead at the end of the period.
RGV fought its way through the beginning of the second quarter. With 8:28 remaining in the first half, Cummings made a layup to steal a 36-35 lead for the Vipers. Hamilton followed with a shot from beyond the arc to extend RGV's lead to 39-35. RGV continued to hold on to control and was up 61-54 at halftime.
Early in the third quarter, Murry made a dunk to send the Legends on an 8-0 run to take a 69-68 lead with 6:59 on the clock. It was the Legends' only lead of the second half. Johnson responded with a three-pointer to put RGV back on top 71-69. Texas outscored RGV 24-20 in the third quarter, but RGV remained on top 81-78 at the end of the period.
A free throw from Murry helped Texas inch within one point of RGV, 83-32, in the first minute of the fourth quarter. Hamilton sank a shot at the line and Livingston nailed a three-pointer to send RGV on a 16-3 run to take a 99-85 advantage with 5:50 remaining in the game. The Vipers held on to their double-digit lead the remainder of the game to win 113-101.
RGV hosts Texas again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. (CST) in the second game of this back-to-back series.
