Glen, Shipman to Represent RailCats at All-Star Game

GARY, Ind. - Pitchers Willie Glen and Andy Shipman have been selected to the Northern League Team for the 2010 Northern League-Golden League All-Star Game, July 14 at Hi Corbett Field in Tucson, Ariz., by a vote of the league's managers, coaches, players and media.

This will be Glen's third All-Star selection and mark the fourth time in the last five years the right-hander has been picked to participate in his league's All-Star Game. A 2006 and 2007 Northern League All-Star, Glen was named to the 2008 Southern League (AA) All-Star Game while a member of the Florida Marlins organization. Glen started the 2007 Northern League All-Star Game en route to a record-setting 162 strikeout season.

This season, Glen is 4-2 with a 3.79 ERA and ranks third in the league with 45 strikeouts. Glen tops the RailCats in wins, innings pitched (57.0) and strikeouts, and has walked only 15 batters all year. The Northern League Pitcher of the Week June 28, Glen has been at his best lately with a 3-0 record in his last four starts including just the second complete game shutout of his career, June 26 at Fargo-Moorhead.

The RailCats all-time career leader in wins (36), strikeouts (429), innings pitched (466.0), winning percentage (.766) and batting average against (.232), Glen was the 2007 Northern League Pitcher of the Year before spending the last two seasons at Double-A and Triple-A with the Marlins. The 10-year pro has over 900 lifetime strikeouts in just over 1,000 career innings.

Shipman makes his second straight Northern League All-Star Team and leads the league in saves (11) through Sunday's games. The former Triple-A reliever converted each of his first 11 save opportunities this summer and has 19 strikeouts in 20.1 innings. With a team-leading 20 appearances in 2010, Shipman is one of only three Northern League relievers to pitch in at least 20 games this year.

The 2009 Northern League Relief Pitcher of the Year, Shipman won a Northern League Championship with the Kansas City T-Bones in 2008 before being waived and joining the RailCats early in the 2009 season. Shipman led the Northern League with 14 saves last year and needs one more RailCats save to match Tony Cogan's career franchise saves record.

A total of 23 players were named to the squad in the first-ever All-Star game between the two leagues. Fargo-Moorhead led the way with five selections and at least one representative was picked from each of the Northern League's eight teams. Doug Simunic of the defending league champion RedHawks will manage the squad.

Glen, Shipman and the RailCats (23-20) open a six-game homestand to end the first half of the season tonight at 7 p.m. against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (23-16). It's a Day Late and a Dollar Monday at U. S. Steel Yard as the RailCats will celebrate the oft-overlooked Fifth of July with a brilliant post-game fireworks show.
