ABOUT LAST GAME: The Fireflies dropped the series finale to the BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park on Tuesday afternoon, 6-2. Jake Simon made his first appearance on the mound since June 5 (was on disabled list). The southpaw tossed 2.2 innings out of the bullpen, allowed one run (unearned), and punched out two batters.
INTERSTATE 20 RIVALRY: Columbia and Augusta have battled 14 times this season. Six of these meetings have been decided by two runs or less. The Fireflies are 6-1 against the GreenJackets over the last seven encounters. Columbia recently inked its own record book in a game against Augusta on July 2. Scott Manea tied a single-game record with 6 RBIs. The Fireflies scored 16 runs, matching a club record.
THE LEGEND OF THE RED RAIDER: Former Texas Tech slugger Zach Rheams has gotten off to quite the start with Columbia. The lefty is 5-for-16 at the plate (.313 BA) in just six games. All five hits have gone for extra bases (four doubles and one home run).
BEST OF LUCK: Blake Tiberi was promoted to Advanced-A St. Lucie today. Tiberi was phenomenal on Columbia's recent seven-game road trip. The 23-year-old went 12-for-24 (.500 BA) in six contests from July 11-17. His 12 hits are tied for the fourth-most by a player in all of MiLB during this span. In addition, Tiberi held a .339 batting average in July with the Fireflies.
DOUBLE MACHINE: Scott Manea has eight doubles in July, which is tied for the second-most by an individual across all of MiLB.
- *Three players tied with 10*
- *Five players tied with 8 including Manea*
ALSO, A BRICK WALL: Manea has also been stellar behind the plate this season. In 43 starts behind the plate this year, Manea has been charged with just four passed balls - no other catcher in the league with 40 or more starts has fewer than 4 passed balls.
FAVORITE FOOD: Fireflies outfielder Dionis Paulino enjoys 'sancocho', which is a Latin American specialty consisting of meat and vegetables in a thick soup or stew. Paulino says his mother, Louisa, makes the best sancocho back home in the Dominican Republic.
