HAGERSTOWN, MD - Spencer Howard gave up one unearned run over six innings to lead the BlueClaws to a 5-1 series-opening win at Hagerstown on Thursday night.
Howard (6-7) has allowed just the one unearned run over three starts and 18 innings against the Suns this year. The right-hander struck out eight in earning his sixth win of the season.
Lakewood (17-9/58-37) got to 21 games over .500 for the first time this year while improving to 14-5 in 19 meetings with the Suns (8-18/35-59). The BlueClaws are now 1.5 games ahead of Delmarva in the SAL Northern Division.
The BlueClaws jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Jake Scheiner. The Lakewood All-Star has now hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games.
The Suns tied the game in the second when Juan Pascal reached on a Quincy Nieporte error at first base. In the fourth, Lakewood re-claimed the lead on a SAC fly from Daniel Brito to bring home Nieporte with the go-ahead run.
After Suns starter Jackson Tetreault (3-8) came out after seven, the BlueClaws scored three times off Frankie Bartow in the eighth. A Matt Vierling RBI double opened the scoring, which also included a wild pitch that brought Vierling in and an RBI fielder's choice groundout from Daniel Brito.
Tetreault allowed two runs over seven, finishing that many innings for the third time in his last four starts.
Connor Brogdon threw a pair of 1-2-3 innings in the seventh and eighth. Zach Warren came on and threw a scoreless ninth inning. Warren has now allowed just one run in 10.1 innings in the second half with 15 strikeouts.
Nieporte had two hits and Brito added two RBIs for the BlueClaws in the win.
The teams continue their series on Friday night at 7:05 pm. LHP Damon Jones (7-3) starts for Lakewood opposite RHP Malvin Pena (1-0).
