Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine - The Portland Sea Dogs rallied with a three-run eighth and defeated the Akron RubberDucks 3-2 in front of 6,331 fans on Saturday night at Hadlock Field.
Trailing 2-0 in the eighth, Portland sent eight men to the plate. Jeremy Rivera delivered an RBI single off of Jake Paulson (L, 3-2) to score Tanner Nishioka and cut the deficit to 2-1. Two batters later with the bases loaded, Jantzen Witte hit a ground ball to third and Joe Sever made an error that allowed Jhon Nunez to score and tie the game. Then Luke Tendler hit a sac fly to give the Sea Dogs the winning run.
Sea Dogs starter Mike Shawaryn (ND) allowed just one run over seven innings on four hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. Shawaryn tied season highs in both innings pitched and strikeouts.
The RubberDucks took a 1-0 lead in the fifth on a sac fly by Sam Haggerty to score Willi Castro, who had singled to begin the inning and stole a base.
Akron plated another run in the eighth on an RBI bloop single by Joe Sever off Jordan Weems (W, 1-0) with the infield pulled in. Weems was able to strike out Willi Castro with the bases loaded to escape the jam and keep the deficit 2-0 at the time.
Josh Taylor struck out Connor Marabell in the top of the ninth to strand two runners and end the ballgame.
Making his first start since breaking his foot on April 24th, Peoples threw four scoreless innings in the start for Akron and allowed just two hits while fanning two.
Jake Paulson entered in relief and worked the final four innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits while walking two and striking out three.
The Sea Dogs and Akron RubberDucks (Indians affiliate) wrap-up their three-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:00 PM start at Hadlock Field. A pair of lefties face-off in the homestand finale, as Dedgar Jimenez (1-4, 5.79) takes on Sean Brady (2-3, 4.25)
