Syracuse Mets News Release
Buffalo, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs snapped their five-game losing streak with a 7-2 win over the Buffalo Bisons Wednesday night at Coca-Cola Field. Phillips Valdez twirled seven brilliant innings of scoreless baseball and Hunter Jones hit a grand slam in the eighth inning to seal the win.
Syracuse (20-23) scored first for the third game in a row. Matt Reynolds doubled with two outs in the third inning against Ryan Borucki and Jose Marmolejos singled him in for a 1-0 lead.
The game held at 1-0 until the sixth. Borucki walked three batters, Moises Sierra, Jason Martinson and Tuffy Gosewisch, to load the bases with two outs. Bengie Gonzalez followed with a two-run singled to left-center field to push the Chiefs lead to 3-0.
Valdez was stellar in his second straight spot start. The right-hander only threw 65 pitches in seven innings, and did not walk a batter, allowing just two hits. Valdez extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 15 and one-third.
Syracuse put the exclamation point on the game in the eighth. Murphy Smith walked Martinson, Gosewisch singled and Gonzalez reached on an error. Jones followed with a grand slam to left-center field, the first grand slam hit by a Chief since May 17, 2017, to make the score 7-0.
Buffalo (18-17) added two runs in the bottom of the eighth. Austin Adams walked Danny Jansen who moved to second on a passed ball. After two strikeouts, Ian Parmley singled to put runners on first and third, and Richard Urena hit a ground ball to second. Urena reached first on an infield single, but Gonzalez's throw was wide of first an allowed Parmley to reach third. Parmley then scored on a balk to make the score 7-2.
The Chiefs look to split the series Thursday at 1:05 p.m. RHP Edwin Jackson is scheduled to start for Syracuse opposite RHP Justin Dillon.
