Chiefs Comeback Falls Short Tuesday in Buffalo

Buffalo, NY - The Syracuse Chiefs scored two runs in the eighth inning to get within a run, but fell to the Buffalo Bisons, 5-4, Tuesday night at Coca-Cola Field. Tommy Milone threw a complete game and struck out a season-high nine batters, but the Bisons scored four runs in the second inning and an insurance run in the seventh to win a sixth straight game over Syracuse to start the season series.

Syracuse (19-23) took the lead first for the second day in a row. Matt Reynolds and Jose Marmolejos hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the first off Luis Santos for a 1-0 lead.

Buffalo (18-16) grabbed the lead for good in the second inning. Danny Jansen doubled to start the inning and then Lourdes Gurriel, Jr. homered to left field to give the Bisons a 2-0 lead. After a fly out, the Bisons went double, home run again when Jason Leblebijian doubled and Gift Ngoepe followed with a two-run home run to push the lead to 4-1.

The Chiefs grabbed a run in the top of the third. Syracuse loaded the bases when Bengie Gonzalez and Yadiel Hernandez singled and Reynolds walked. After a pop out, Jacob Wilson hit a hard ground ball to short that hit off the glove of Richard Urena for an infield single to make it a 4-2 game.

After allowing the Ngoepe home run, Milone retired 15 straight Bisons hitters until the seventh inning when Reese McGuire doubled with one out. After a strikeout, Ngoepe hit his second extra-base hit of the game, this time a triple to score McGuire and make it a 5-2 game.

In the eighth, Sam Moll got the first two Chiefs, but Marmolejos reached on an error on Gurriel at second to extend the inning. Syracuse took advantage with a Wilson RBI double and an Irving Falu RBI single to cut the deficit to one at 5-4. But Justin Shafer came in an induced a pop out to end the inning, then retired the Chiefs in the ninth for the save.

Syracuse looks to snap its five-game losing streak Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. when the series continues at Coca-Cola Field.
