Yonny Chirinos Named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week

Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release

Bowling Green, Ky. - Bowling Green right-handed pitcher Yonny Chirinos became the second Hot Rod this season to be named Midwest League Pitcher of the Week as announced by the Midwest League offices on Monday.

Chirinos follows in the footsteps of Greg Harris, who was named Pitcher of the Week for the week of June 22-28 - the same time frame when Bowling Green slugger Hunter Lockwood was also named Hitter of the Week.

In his first road start for the Hot Rods, Chirinos tossed 6.0 innings of one-hit baseball against West Michigan on June 13, walking one and striking out four in what was the second win of Bowling Green's six-game winning streak from July 12-18.

Since earning a call-up from short-season Hudson Valley in the New York-Penn League, the Venezuelan right hander is 2-0 over two starts (11.0 total innings) having allowed no runs while scattering just three hits with eight strikeouts and just one walk. Left-handed hitters are hitting at a .125 clip (2-for-16) against Chirinos, while right-handed batters are finding little success, as well, hitting a measly .053 (1-for-19).

Bowling Green looks to win its three-game series against Lake County on Monday night at 6 p.m. CDT at Classic Park in Eastlake, Ohio, when right-hander Jose Mujica (0-0, 0.00) makes his Hot Rods' debut, opposing Captains' southpaw Justus Sheffield (7-3, 4.35).
