Idaho Stampede News Release
Grand Rapids, Michigan (February 4, 2015) - The Idaho Stampede battled back from a 24 point deficit in the fourth quarter, only to fall short to the Drive 97-101. The trip was the team's first ever visit to Grand Rapids.
The Drive jumped out to a quick start, outscoring the Stampede 40-23 in the second quarter and taking a 67-44 lead into the half. Grand Rapids shot 65 percent in the first half and were in great position to close the game out. The Stampede came out strong in the third quarter and cut the Drive's lead down to 16 entering the final frame.
Idaho continued the comeback in the fourth quarter, eventually bringing the game within two points with 46 seconds remaining. Drive forward Willie Reed hit a couple of free throws, giving Grand Rapids a four-point advantage. The Stampede's Jack Cooley was then called for an illegal screen, forfeiting the possession and ultimately ending Idaho's chance at completing the comeback.
Jerrelle Benimon led the Stampede with 19 points, adding nine rebounds and four assists. Joel Wright provided a spark in the third quarter, scoring 11 of his 18 points. Forward Jack Cooley recorded his third consecutive double-double, posting 12 points and 10 rebounds.
The only players that scored in double-figures for Grand Rapids came from the starting lineup. Adonis Thomas (24 points), Brandon Fields (23 points) and Willie Reed (20 points, 13 rebounds) helped the Drive jump out to a big lead. The Drive never trailed in the game and led by as many as 24 points.
The Stampede return home this weekend for the fourth consecutive Real Men Wear Pink night on Friday, Feb. 6.
