Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
Tarpley Strong, But IronBirds Fall
The Aberdeen IronBirds fell for a second night in a row last night, losing 2-0 to the Williamsport Crosscutters. The Crosscutters got a home run for the second straight night from Jiandido Tromp, and, with a run in the seventh inning, the Crosscutters secured the series win and will look for a sweep tonight. Stephen Tarpley pitched well, giving up five hits in six innings of work, allowing just the Tromp home run and one walk, striking out four. Offensively for the IronBirds, Jay Gonzalez had a two hit game, while Alex Murphy and Jamill Moquete each collected singles.
Murphy's Hit Extends Streak
Alex Murphy's fourth inning single extended his hitting streak to six games. He had a nine game hitting streak earlier this year, from June 17th through June 26th. Austin Anderson has the longest streak of the season at 10 games, a streak that stretched from July 7th to July 17th. Murphy's current streak began on July 29th with a three hit game against the Tri-City ValleyCats.
Be Quick, But Don't Hurry
Last night's game was the shortest game in franchise history at just one hour, 56 minutes. While the game was delayed by rain for 42 minutes in the middle of the fifth inning, the game broke the previous shortest game mark by all of one minute. The IronBirds lost 1-0 to the Hudson Valley Renegades on July 6, 2005 in a game that lasted one hour, 57 minutes.
Off Day On Deck
Following tonight's contest in Williamsport, the IronBirds will return to Aberdeen and enjoy an off day tomorrow before opening up a six game home stand. The Vermont Lake Monsters come to town for three games from Wednesday through Friday, before the Jamestown Jammers visit Ripken Stadium Saturday through Monday. Following Monday night's home game, the IronBirds will board the bus and take an overnight trip to Burlington to take on the Lake Monsters for three games August 12th through the 14th at Centennial Field.
On the Mound Tonight...
RHP Matthew Grimes will make his first professional start for the IronBirds tonight. He was selected by the Baltimore Orioles in the 18th round of the 2014 draft and is 1-2 on the season with a 7.00 ERA. He will face Crosscutters' LHP Brandon Leibrandt.
