San Antonio Missions News Release
Corpus Christi rallied for two runs in the seventh to send San Antonio to a 3-2 loss Sunday night at Wolff Stadium.
Just like they did in Saturday night's win, the Missions jumped out to a first-inning lead on Sunday. Rico Noel started the rally with a leadoff ground-rule double down the right-field line. Cory Spangenberg followed with a sacrifice bunt that was mishandled by catcher Ryan McCurdy, putting runners on first and third with nobody out. Next batter, Tommy Medica gave San Antonio a 1-0 lead when he lifted a sacrifice fly to center. Two batters later, Adam Buschini pushed the lead to two on a run-producing fielder's choice.
San Antonio starter Matt Wisler allowed just two hits, while striking out five over four scoreless innings. The Bryan, OH native was lifted after the fourth due to an innings restriction.
Corpus Christi took advantage of Wisler's exit in the fifth. With one out, designated hitter Matt Duffy cut the Hooks' deficit to one with a solo homer to left off reliever Ryan Kelly. The Hooks threatened to do more damage against Kelly, loading the bases with two outs. San Antonio manager Rich Dauer elected to bring in left hander Jeff Ibarra, who struck out Preston Tucker to end the threat.
However, in the seventh, the Hooks rallied for a pair of runs against Tim Sexton (2-2). After Ronny Torreyes led off the inning with a single, Leonardo Heras followed with a game-tying, triple to right. Next batter, Enrique Hernandez gave Corpus Christi a 3-2 lead with an RBI single into right field.
The Missions had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the frame, putting a runner on third with just one out. However, Hooks reliever Andrew Robinson preserved the one-run lead by getting Jeudy Valdez to ground out and Noel to fly out to left.
Robinson kept San Antonio off the board over the final two innings to record his third save of the season. Starter Nick Tropeano (7-9) earned the win after allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits, while striking out eight in six innings of work. With the victory, the Hooks closed to within one game of the Missions in the South Division, second-half standings with just eight games left.
San Antonio (76-55, 38-24) and Corpus Christi (79-53, 37-25) wrap up their three-game series Monday in what will be the final Missions home game in the regular season. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM. Right hander Josh Geer (8-4, 3.02) will take the hill for the Missions, while the Hooks will counter with lefty Luis Cruz (1-0, 1.29).
Notes: In 11 home starts this season, Wisler is 5-0 with a 1.68 ERA and a K:BB ratio of 60:12.
