Northwest Arkansas Naturals News Release
SPRINGDALE, AR - Cheslor Cuthbert is the youngest Naturals Position Player to win the Texas League Player of the Week award. League President Tom Kayser announced this morning the 20-year-old Naturals Third Baseman was named Texas League Player of the Week for the period spanning from August 19th through August 25th.
The Nicaragua-native hit safely in each of the six games last week going 8-for-19 at the plate with a homerun, 7 RBI, three doubles, and four runs scored. Pinch-hitting in the 8th Inning of last Tuesday's record-setting 21-6 Naturals victory, Cuthbert smacked a three-run homerun to put the Naturals in front of Springfield by six. He stayed in the game at third base.
Heading into the 2013 Season, Baseball America ranked Cuthbert as the number-nine prospect in the Kansas City Royals Organization. Since his June 14th promotion to Northwest Arkansas, the pride of Big Corn Island has played exclusively third base and hit mostly fourth or fifth in the batting order. He has maintained a .235 average with 6 homeruns, 16 doubles, and 28 RBI.
At 20 years and 9 months old Cuthbert edges out C Salvador Perez as the youngest Naturals positions player ever to win the Texas League Player of the Week Award. The Royals All-Star catcher was 21 years and one month old when he was awarded the Award on July 26, 2011. LHP John Lamb is the youngest Natural to win the Award. He did so for his appearances in the week of August 23-30th, 2010 at the age of 19 years and one month.
The occasion marks the ninth time a Naturals player has taken home a weekly award this season. In 2010, the Naturals set the mark with 10 award winners.
Cuthbert is expected to play third base and bat clean-up tonight as the Naturals look to move into a first-place tie with the Travelers. The three-game set with their intra-state rival concludes tonight at 7:05pm/CT at Arvest Ballpark when RHP Jason Adam brings his 3-0 August record and 1.05 ERAto the mound to face-off against the Travelers RHP Mike Piazza (5-2, 3.21 ERA). Tickets remain on sale and the game can be heard on 92.1 The Ticket KFAY-FM with Steven Davis and Andrew Reynolds.
