Bosco Nets Three Hits, But Spikes Fall to Renegades, 4-2

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Jimmy Bosco paced the State College Spikes offense with a trio of hits, but despite the Spikes erasing two deficits for the second night in a row, the Hudson Valley Renegades held on to take a 4-2 decision on Sunday night at Dutchess Stadium.

Bosco, who made his return to the lineup on Sunday after not appearing in an official game since Wednesday in Aberdeen, put up his fourth game of three hits or more on the 2013 season with two singles and a ground-rule double. Both the double and his sixth-inning single set up State College (14-12) runs.

Steven Ramos also had a strong game, going 2-for-2 with a double, a single, a walk and a stolen base. Ramos scored both Spikes runs as well, with each tying the game.

State College pitching held Hudson Valley (16-12) bats at bay early, with the Renegades not getting a hit until the fifth inning. Ben O'Shea started and yielded just one walk while striking out three over three innings of work before leaving the game. Victor DeLeon then took over and retired the first five batters he faced before giving up a walk, a hit batsman and a James Harris single to give Hudson Valley a 1-0 lead in the fifth.

Kyle Webb (1-1) took the loss after allowing both of the Renegades' game-clinching, unearned runs in the eighth. The sidearmer logged a total of 1 1/3 innings, yielding one hit and one hit batsman while striking out two.

Cory Jordan (1-1) got the win in relief with two one-run innings on the hill. Jordan gave up four hits and recorded one strikeout. Renegades starter Aaron Griffin lasted six innings and allowed one run on five hits and a walk while striking out three. Andrew Hanse (2) earned the save with a perfect ninth inning for Hudson Valley.

Oscar Hernandez went 1-for-3 with two runs batted in to surpass State College's David Washington for the New York-Penn League lead in RBI with 23 to Washington's 22. Ty Young collected a pair of hits, including the ground-rule double that drove in the Renegades' go-ahead run in the eighth.

The game was a literal scorcher as well, with the gametime temperature at Dutchess Stadium sitting at 93 degrees.

Monday, the Spikes finish off their road trip with a special 11:05 a.m. contest at Dutchess Stadium to complete the three-game series against the Renegades. State College will send right-hander Willy Paulino (1-1) to the mound for his first 2013 road start, while Hudson Valley is slated to go with left-hander Ben Griset (0-2) on the bump.

The Spikes will then enjoy an off day on Tuesday before coming home on Wednesday to take on the Lowell Spinners (Boston Red Sox) at 7:05 p.m. for Bellefonte Community Night, presented by Northwest Savings Bank and 95.3 FM 3WZ. The first 1,000 fans of all ages on the 17th will also receive a bobble head of one of Bellefonte's favorite sons, Eric Milton, to kick off the Local Legends Bobble Head Series. Plus, it will be a Half-Price Wednesday, presented by BIG Froggy 101.

The game kicks off a six-game homestand that extends through Monday, July 22, with the Spinners and Connecticut Tigers (Detroit Tigers) each coming in for three games.
