Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (JUNE 11, 2013) - The Winston-Salem Dash rode a strong pitching performance from starter Chris Bassitt to knock off the Lynchburg Hillcats 7-2 Tuesday night at BB&T Ballpark.
Bassitt (6-2), who had struggled a bit over the last few weeks, looked like the pitcher he had been through the season's first month. The righty surrendered just one run in six and one-third innings, with the only run coming on a solo homer by Kyle Kubitza in his final frame of work. Bassitt walked just one Hillcat (33-30) on the evening while striking out eight, one shy of his career high.
The two teams traded zeroes until Winston-Salem (35-30) pushed across the contest's first tallies in the third. Martin Medina started the frame off by drawing a walk, and he advanced to third on an infield single by Joey DeMichele and an error by Lynchburg's Matt Weaver. Adam Heisler grounded into a fielder's choice for the first out, but it was enough to bring Medina home.
Later in the frame, Hillcats starter Blaine Sims (0-1) would walk Jeremy Farrell and Courtney Hawkins to load the bases for Rangel Ravelo. Ravelo drilled a ground rule double to right to make it 3-0 Dash and put the first baseman 4-for-4 on the season in bases loaded situations.
Winston would tack on a run in the sixth against reliever Billy Bullock. Ravelo drew a walk to start things off before advancing into scoring position on a groundout. With two away, Medina sent a single up the middle to bring across the fourth tally of the contest for the Dash.
The Kubitza home run cut the lead to three in the seventh, but Winston would put the game out of reach with three in the bottom half. The first three all reached in the frame against Hillcat reliever Ryan Woolley, with the first tally of the inning coming around on an RBI single by Chris Curley, the circuit's leader in the category. Later in the seventh, Hawkins drove in a run with a bounce out, and Grant Buckner made it a six-run advantage after a run-producing single.
The final run of the night came in the ninth when Lynchburg scored an unearned run against reliever Brandon Hardin, who worked the final two and two-thirds innings out of Winston-Salem's bullpen.
The Dash and Hillcats wrap up this three-game set Wednesday night at BB&T Ballpark. Righty Chris Beck (6-6, 2.79) will be on the mound for Winston-Salem, while Lynchburg will turn to a right-hander of their own in Greg Ross (2-3, 4.26). Coverage on wsdash.com begins with the Pregame Dash at 6:45, and first pitch is scheduled for 7.
