Big Inning Leads Missions to 10-4 Rout of Hooks

A seven-run, second inning propelled the Missions to a convincing 10-4 win over the first-place Hooks Monday night at Wolff Stadium.

Both teams were kept off the board in the first, but that quickly changed in the second when the Missions erupted for seven runs on seven hits and an error. Johan Limonta capped the big inning with a three-run homer to right, his second of the season. The seven runs tied the second most in an inning for San Antonio in 2013.

After the Hooks got on the board with a run in the third, the Missions pushed their lead back to seven in the bottom of the frame with an RBI single from Reymond Fuentes. The centerfielder finished the game 3-for-5, extending his Texas League-high on-base streak to 32 games, which matches the longest on-base streak for San Antonio since Chase Headley in 2007. Fuentes also made a magnificent diving catch in the top of the third to rob Jonathan Meyer of a hit. See Below.

In the bottom of the fifth, Rico Noel made the score 9-1 with an RBI single to center. Noel finished his night 2-for-4 with a walk, two RBI and two runs. It was the right fielder's 14th multi-hit game this season.

The offensive explosion was plenty for winning starter Matt Wisler (3-2), who allowed just one run on four hits and three walks, while striking out six in his five innings. In four Wolff starts, Wisler is 3-0 with 1.96 ERA.

Corpus Christi got three runs (two earned) between the sixth and seventh innings off reliever Chris Rearick to close within 9-4 before San Antonio third baseman Jake Blackwood produced the final margin with a run-scoring ground out in the bottom of the eighth.

The win moved San Antonio (34-28) within 3.5 games of Corpus Christi (38-25) with seven left in the first half. The two teams will meet in the series finale tomorrow on $2 Tuesday presented by Farmers Insurance. Donn Roach (4-5, 4.22) gets the ball for the Missions, while the Hooks counter with right-hander Mike Foltynewicz (1-0, 1.23). The last time the two hurlers met was also at the Wolff, on May 6, when the two combined to toss 11 scoreless innings in a game Corpus Christi eventually won 3-0. First pitch Tuesday night is 7:05 PM.
