
Six Hooks Tabbed Texas League South All-Stars

SAN ANTONIO - Catcher Rene Garcia, outfielders George Springer and Domingo Santana, and pitchers Jake Buchanan, Mike Foltynewicz and David Martinez have been named to the Texas League South Division All-Star Team. The announcement was made by league president Tom Kayser.
The North & South All-Stars meet in the 77th Texas League All-Star Game Tuesday, June 25, at Northwest Arkansas' Arvest Ballpark in Springdale.
Buchanan is 7-0 with a minor-league best 0.80 ERA in 15 appearances and 10 starts. He has walked just six batters while striking out 38 over 67.1 innings. Buchanan's WHIP of 0.74 tops the minors and his .186 batting average against leads the TL. Houston's 2011 Minor League Pitcher of the Year did not allow an earned run during the month of May.
Martinez, who owns the best record in the minor leagues at 9-0, has fashioned a 2.35 ERA in 15 appearances and nine starts. He has struck out 39 against 12 walks thru 61.1 innings. Martinez has tossed five shutout frames five times. He stands second in the circuit in WHIP (0.99), ranks fourth in ERA and slots fifth in opposition batting average (.219). Martinez won a club-record six consecutive appearances from May 2 to May 24. His last loss was August 18, 2012 at Inland Empire, a span of 18 regular season appearances.
Martinez, Buchanan and Bobby Doran are the only hurlers in Hooks history to begin a season 5-0.
After beginning the year with Lancaster of the California League, Foltynewicz is 1-0 with a 1.08 ERA and three saves in eight appearances and four starts for Corpus Christi. The 19th overall pick in 2010 has allowed one run or less in all but one of his outings with the Hooks. Foltynewicz has struck out 33 and walked 15 in in 33.1 innings, limiting the league to a .153 batting average.
Springer, the 11th overall selection in the 2011 draft, is hitting .305 with a minor-league best 18 home runs and 50 RBIs. He stands as the Texas League leader in RBIs, runs (50), slugging percentage (.623), extra-base hits (35) and total bases (139). Springer also ranks third in steals (18) and is tied for third with 35 walks. He is fourth in on-base percentage (.409), fifth in doubles (17) and seventh in batting average. Springer enters tonight's action having reached safely in 27 consecutive games.
Santana is batting .260 with 14 doubles, 11 home runs and 35 RBIs in 53 games. His home run and RBI totals rank second on the club.
Hooks pitchers are 21-10 with a 2.67 ERA when Garcia is working behind the plate. He leads all South catchers with a 36% caught-stealing rate. Garcia, who boasted a 30-game on-base streak from April 11 to May 30, is hitting .290 with nine doubles, three home runs and 18 RBIs.
