Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
SAN ANTONIO - Johan Limonta's three-run home run capped a seven-run second inning for the Missions who ran roughshod over the Hooks 10-4 Monday night at Wolff Municipal Stadium.
Corpus Christi (38-25), having lost two in a row, now leads Frisco by a single game in the Texas League South first-half race.
With one away and one on in the second, Jeudy Valdez hit a double down the left-field line. Cory Spangenberg was next and cracked a Baltimore chop to third baseman Jonathan Meyer. By the time the ball was gloved, the speedy Spangenberg was two-thirds of the way down the line. Meyer did not risk a throw with a runner at third. Ruben Alaniz (2-6) then issued a bases-loaded walk to Rico Noel for the first run. With Reymond Fuentes at the plate, catcher Max Stassi committed his first passed ball of the season, allowing Valdez to score. Stassi fired a desperation throw to the plate but the ball banged off the helmet of Valdez and caromed up the third baseline. Spangenberg raced home on the play.
Fuentes then capitalized on a drawn-in infield with a chopper toward second baseman Enrique Hernandez, who ranged far to his left and made an off-balanced throw home. Noel beat the rap for San Antonio's fourth run. Yeison Asencio's double ended Alaniz's night. Limonta greeted Matt Heidenriech with his second home run of the year, giving the Missions a 7-0 lead.
San Antonio (34-28) starter Matt Wisler spread four hits over five innings. Jio Mier opened the third with a walk and advanced to second when George Springer, who has reached safely in 27 consecutive games, sent a line drive into left field. Jon Singleton put the Hooks on the board with a single to center. Wisler (3-2) retired the next three batters with the final out coming on a tremendous diving catch by Fuentes in left-center, robbing Meyer of extra bases and two RBIs.
Undeterred, Meyer extended his club-best hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run blast to left off lefty Chris Rearick. It marked his second home run in as many nights.
The Hooks shoot for the series split Tuesday. Mike Foltynewicz (1-0) and David Martinez (9-0) take on Donn Roach (4-5). First pitch is 7:05.
