Myrtle Beach Pelicans News Release
The Myrtle Beach Pelicans (33-28, .541), Class-A Advanced affiliates of the Texas Rangers, scored four runs in the sixth inning Sunday and held on for a 6-4 win against the Carolina Mudcats at Five County Stadium. The Birds converted a series sweep over Carolina and remain percentage points ahead of Winston-Salem (34-29, .540) heading into play Monday.
Trailing 4-2 the Pelicans scored four runs in the sixth inning. Trever Adams stroked an RBI double off the left field wall and Joe Maloney drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game. With the bases loaded, Edwin Garcia lined a two-run double down the left field line.
Left-hander Will Lamb (1-0) earned the win, tossing four scoreless innings in his longest effort of the season. He relieved Asher in the fourth inning and recorded two outs in the eighth. Randol Rojas worked the final 1.1 innings and collected the first save of his career.
Pelicans starter Alec Asher lasted 3.2 innings and allowed four earned runs on five hits. The Mudcats loaded the bases with one out in the second inning, but Asher struck out Paddy Matera and Zach MacPhee to get out of trouble. They loaded the bases again in the fourth and struck for four runs to take a 4-2 lead. The right-hander walked three and struck out four in the game.
Kellin Deglan laced a two-run home run in the second inning to give the Pelicans the early 2-0 lead. It was his team-leading ninth home run of the season. Deglan also added a double into the right field corner in the fifth inning.
The Pelicans saw four players tally multiple hits; Patrick Cantwell and Garcia went 2-for-4 while Adams and Deglan posted 2-for-5 performances.
The Pelicans begin a three-game series Monday with the Frederick Keys at TicketReturn.com Field. Right-hander Nick Martinez (4-3, 2.73) will be opposed by Keys' righty Zach Petersime (2-5, 6.99). First pitch is slated for 7:05 p.m. EST.
Tomorrow is a "Make a Splash Monday" presented by HTC. On Tuesday the team celebrates $2 for Tuesday with $2 craft beers and will unveil its new Pelicans brew for the first time in a pre-game ceremony in Hops Heaven at TicketReturn.Com Field.
