Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - The Kernels fell to the Quad Cities River Bandits, 6-1, on Friday night.

For the first time in the series, the Kernels pushed across the first run across in the game. Dalton Hicks doubled home J.D. Williams, who walked. Hicks increased his hit streak to 12 games and now leads the Midwest League in RBI with 51.

Quad Cities posted a big inning offensively in the top of the 3rd. The first three batters reached base against Kernels starter Christian Powell, and the frame was highlighted when Jordan Scott tripled home two runs and Carlos Correa connected for an RBI double. Correa finished the series 6-for-13 with 7 RBI.

The River Bandits tacked on 2 more runs in the 5th as Correa and Jesse Wierzbicki scored to increase the team's lead to 6-1.

The Kernels recorded just 4 hits on the night, with no hits coming after the 3rd. Hicks, Jorge Polanco, Joel Licon, and Travis Harrison all had a hit each.

Powell (0-1) went 5 innings in his Kernels debut, allowing 6 runs on 8 hits while walking 1 and striking out 5. He threw 3 wild pitches. Relievers Caleb Brewer, Tim Atherton, and Steve Gruver finished the game, allowing no runs and no hits.

River Bandits starter Daniel Minor pitched three innings, allowing one run on 4 hits while walking 2 and striking out 1. Reliever Mitchell Lambson bridged the gap between two Quad Cities pitchers - the Astros organization utilizes a "piggyback" rotation strategy - and struck out the side.

Lance McCullers (3-4) then entered the contest and threw 4 hitless innings, striking out 5. The No. 41 overall pick in the 2012 MLB Draft registered 98 mph on the radar gun and retired 7 in a row at one stage.
