Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release

Lansing, MI - The Fort Wayne TinCaps turned in their highest offensive output in nearly a month Friday night, defeating the Lansing Lugnuts, 10-6, at Cooley Law School Stadium. Walker Weickel earned his first win in 10 tries, while the TinCaps completed a three-game sweep over the Lugnuts to improve to a season-best 13 games over .500.

Fort Wayne (36-23) got off to a stellar beginning, scoring four runs in the first inning as they sent nine batters to the plate against starter Taylor Cole (3-4). They extended their lead to 7-0 after a three run top of the fifth inning. By the time the top of the fifth had ended, eight of the nine members of the TinCaps starting lineup had reached base at least once, Chris Burke had three runs batted in and Luis Tejada had knocked in two.

Weickel (1-3) cruised through the Lansing (25-32) lineup over the first four innings. The Orlando, Florida, native faced just one batter over the minimum in that span, surrendering just one base hit. He encountered trouble in the fifth, allowing three runs to score as the Lugnuts sent seven men to the plate, but he escaped further trouble, leaving as the pitcher of record on the winning end for the first time this season.

The TinCaps added two more runs in the sixth, and Lansing struck for three runs in the seventh against Fort Wayne reliever Joe Church, making it 9-6 in favor of Fort Wayne after seven innings. The TinCaps plated one run in the eighth, cementing their lead at 10-6.

Lansing's defense failed to help the Lugnuts cause over the three-game series, as only 11 of the 23 runs the TinCaps scored in the series were earned runs. Lansing committed nine errors over the course of the set. The TinCaps, in addition their run output, collected 33 hits, making it eight of the nine first-half games against Lansing where they had at least 10 hits.

The TinCaps now return home to start a six-game homestand Saturday night at 7:05. The Dayton Dragons come to town for a three-game series, followed by a three-game visit from the Lake County Captains. Saturday's scheduled starters are former first-round picks Joe Ross for Fort Wayne and Robert Stephenson for Dayton. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com.
