Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN -- In their first game at Parkview Field in six days, the TinCaps lost to the South Bend Silver Hawks on Wednesday afternoon, 4-2. Maxx Tissenbaum drove in both runs for Fort Wayne, including his first home run of the season.
Fort Wayne (25-18) starter Max Fried entered the game on a string of 14 consecutive innings without having allowed a run, but that changed in the first inning Wednesday. Fried allowed a lead-off single to Fidel Pena and then walked Breland Almadova. After two groundball outs, runners were at second and third base for Alex Glenn, who hit an infield single to shortstop to score Pena and give South Bend (26-16) a 1-0 advantage.
In the top of the second inning, with Carter Bell at first and one out, left-handed hitting Rudy Flores launched a two-run homer off Fried to make the score 3-0. Flores' homer was the first allowed by Fried this season and also the first surrendered by TinCaps pitching at Parkview Field in 2013. One inning later in, Almadova homered to center field off the brand new 400 Club to extend the Silver Hawks' lead to 4-0.
Tissenbaum responded for the TinCaps in the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to right field against South Bend starter Blake Perry. However, that was all Fort Wayne could muster against the right-hander, who left the game after the fourth inning with his team up 4-1.
Fried (2-1, 2.95) settled in after the third to throw three scoreless frames. In six innings, the lefty struck out five. Matthew Shepherd replaced Fried and pitched three perfect innings with three strikeouts.
Offensively, though, the TinCaps were stymied by Enrique Garcia, who relieved Perry, and didn't give up a run in four innings of work. Fort Wayne didn't score again until the ninth inning against South Bend closer RJ Hively, when Mallex Smith scored from third on a one-out single to right by Tissenbaum, cutting the TinCaps' deficit to 4-2. Hively recovered, though, to retire Jeremy Baltz and Dane Phillips to end the game.
With two RBI on Wednesday, Tissenbaum has driven in five runs in his last three games. In 22 games from April 21 through May 17, Tissenbaum had only two runs batted in.
The TinCaps and Silver Hawks are scheduled for a doubleheader at Parkview Field on Thursday with the first game set to begin at 6:05. Both games will be seven-inning affairs. The doubleheader can be heard on The Fan 1380 and TheFanFortWayne.com, and seen on XFINITY Channel 81.
