Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
THE LEAD OFF: West Virginia dropped the series finale with Lexington on Sunday afternoon, falling 12-5. The Legends plated six runs in the first inning before adding single runs in the second and third to build their lead. The Power scored three in the bottom of the second and trailed 8-4 after Stetson Allie's fifth inning home run. Lexington added four in the sixth off the Power bullpen. West Virginia managed just one more run in the bottom of the ninth en route to the defeat. Jake Burnette made the start for the Power and surrendered the first inning runs over two-thirds of an inning. Allie paced the West Virginia with three hits while Max Moroff drove in a pair.
BACK UNDER... BUT: Sunday's loss dropped the Power back under .500, but the club will play its' next 17 games against opponents who also currently have losing records. After this three games series in Kannapolis, West Virginia will host Lakewood and Greensboro, travel to play the BlueClaws in New Jersey, and host Delmarva. Entering play on Monday, those clubs are each at least three games under .500.
DIVISIONAL RUN: West Virginia is 5-5 within the South Atlantic League's Northern Division; by far the fewest divisional games played by any team in the league this season. The Charleston RiverDogs have played the second fewest games in their own division at 17. The Power do, however, play nothing but Northern Division games for the remainder of the first half. In fact, the next 41 games are all against divisional opponents.
NO FEAR: The Power open their season series tonight against the Kannapolis Intimidators. These two clubs will play ten times this season, though this is the only set during the first half. The Intimidators hold a seven win lead in the all-time series dating back to 2005 at 45-38. West Virginia is 19-23 since 2005 in Kannapolis; the site of six meetings in the series this year.
ONE HIT- TWO HIT: Tyler Glasnow and Pat Ludwig's combined one hitter in game one on Saturday was the first by West Virginia pitchers in nearly three years. Kyle McPherson and Jason Erickson combined to throw a one hitter against Lexington in a nine inning game on May 25, 2010 at Appalachian Power Park. Saturday's effort came on the heels of Clay Holmes, Bryton Trepagnier, and Ryan Hafner combining to pitch a two-hitter on Friday evening.
Mike Jefferson and Nathan Kilcrease worked the last two hitter prior to Friday; a seven-inning game on August 30, 2012 at Charleston, SC.
SECOND FASTEST: West Virginia's win Friday was their 20th of the season, making them the second fastest club to reach 20 wins in a season since the Power affiliation with the Pirates began. The 2012 edition of the Power did not win their 20th game of the season until June 9 in their 62nd game of the season. The 2011 club was 20-19 on May 19 after 39 games while the 2010 version was 20-22 on May 22. The inaugural club did not win their 20th game until game 52 on June 2, 2009 (game 52).
PROMO UPDATE- REDNECK NIGHT: The award-winning Redneck Night is back on Saturday, May 25. The event will feature an appearance by Duck Dynasty's Mountain Man and the first 1,000 fans through the gates will receive a duck call. The 2012 version of this promotion was named as the best theme night in Minor League Baseball.
POWER POINTS: Walker Gourley has a seven game hitting streak entering play in his next game, while Raul Fortunato takes a six game streak into play next time out... Josh Bell has his 17-game on-base streak snapped in game one Saturday. Bell had reached safely by hit or walk in every game he had played since April 28 in Savannah... Jake Burnette's start on Sunday was the shortest by any Power pitcher this season... Stetson Allie now has two home runs over his last three games after not hitting one in any of his previous 14...
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION: Pittsburgh edged the Houston Astros 1-0. Jeff Locke earned the win and Pedro Alvarez hit a home run for the only offense... Indianapolis dropped an 11-3 final at Pawtucket... Altoona was blanked 3-0 by Richmond... Bradenton upended St. Lucie 8-1.
ON THE AIR: West Virginia Power games can be heard on Charleston's ESPN 104.5 FM and 1490 AM in Charleston, WV, and online at wvpower.com. Adam Marco will call the action for all 140 games this season and will be joined by Mike Baggerman when the team plays at Appalachian Power Park.
