Kannapolis Cannon Ballers News Release
KANNAPOLIS, N.C. (May 20, 2013) -- The West Virginia Power surged past the Kannapolis Intimidators, 11-2, on Monday at CMC-NorthEast Stadium to take the first game of a three-game series. Kannapolis (15-25) couldn't come up with runs early and West Virginia (22-22) burst in front with five runs in both the sixth and seventh innings.
The Power mashed 14 hits on the night to back up starting pitcher Joely Rodriguez (3-3), who worked six scoreless innings, scattering six hits, to record the win. Bryton Trepagnier tossed three innings for a save (3).
Kannapolis starting pitcher Jefferson Olacio got off to his best start in Class A over his first five innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits with a walk and a strikeout. He also picked off two batters over the first three innings. West Virginia's first four batters of the sixth inning reached, chasing Olacio (1-6) from the game and eventually tagging him with a loss.
Max Moroff and Dilson Herrera opened the sixth with singles before Josh Bell's two-run double put West Virginia ahead, 3-0. Olacio walked Stetson Allie, prompting his exit without recording an out in the inning. Walker Gourley pounded a two-run home run (2) off Zach Isler to give the Power a 6-0 lead.
Isler gave up a single, two doubles and two walks to the first five batters of the seventh before being replaced by Storm Throne. All five scored, including Allie, who provided a bases-clearing double. Throne went on to work three scoreless innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out three.
Allie finished 3-for-5, upping his average to .325 for the Power while Bell, the SAL leader in RBI, drove in two runs.
Kannapolis tacked on two runs late in the game, including a Kale Kiser RBI double.
