Sacramento River Cats News Release
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Michael Choice and Jeremy Barfield homered for Sacramento on Sunday afternoon, as the Cats topped the Nashville Sounds on Mother's Day at Greer Stadium, 6-5.
With the Cats leading 3-2 in the eighth inning, a pair of two-out hits stretched the lead to four. Scott Moore's RBI double was followed by a two-run homer by Jeremy Barfield-his first-career Triple-A home run-and the River Cats took a commanding 6-2 lead. But Nashville battled back, plating three runs in the bottom of the eighth to cut the lead to 6-5.
In the ninth, Sacramento closer Dan Otero slammed the door with a 1-2-3 frame to secure the victory and remain perfect in nine save opportunities.
Andrew Werner (3-5) hurled his second-straight quality start for the Cats, picking up the win after allowing just two earned runs in six innings. He struck out six and walked two in the game.
Sounds starter Zach Kroenke (0-6) was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs on eight hits in five innings.
Choice's homer-a solo shot in the second inning-was his team-leading eighth of the season. Andy Parrino and MLB rehabber Hiro Nakajima each chipped in with a pair of hits, while Shane Peterson extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a double.
River Cats RHP Bruce Billings (2-2, 7.20 ERA) is scheduled to toe the slab against Nashville RHP R.J. Seidel (0-0, 4.50 ERA) Monday evening in game three of this four-game set. First pitch from Greer Stadium will be at 5:05 p.m. PT. The River Cats return home for an eight-game homestand beginning Thursday, May 16, at 7:05 p.m.
