Carolina Mudcats News Release
Zebulon, N.C. - The Lynchburg Hillcats clubbed 11 hits against the Carolina Mudcats en route to an 11-4 triumph at Five County Stadium on Sunday afternoon. The Hillcats improved to 19-15, taking the four-game series by way of winning the first three. The Mudcats (13-23) dropped their sixth straight at home.
Greg Ross (1-0) picked up the win in his second start for Lynchburg. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits over 5.2 innings. Ross entered the game with a scoreless innings streak, but that was snapped at 10.0 when Tyler Naquin homered to lead off the sixth.
Shawn Morimando (1-5) suffered his fourth straight loss. The left-hander was hit for a season-high seven runs on seven hits in only four innings. Morimando walked four, and fanned two.
Lynchburg never trailed, jumping out to a 7-0 lead. The Hillcats scored four in the third on three hits, two walks, and a pair of sacrifice-fly outs. They plated three more in the third.
The Mudcats cut the deficit to three in the sixth inning. Naquin's leadoff blast, his third of the year, wrapped around the right field foul pole, and broke up the shutout. With two outs, Jordan Smith drew a walk, and scored on a double to straightaway center by Luigi Rodriguez.
Rodriguez scored from second when Joe Sever beat out a single to shortstop Elmer Reyes behind second base. Trailing 7-3, Ryan Battaglia doubled down the left field line to score Sever. That was as close as the Mudcats would get, however.
Carolina surrendered four two-out runs to Lynchburg in the seventh. Three walks and a two-run single from Emerson Landoni followed back-to-back doubles by Ross Heffley and Reyes off Grant Sides to seal the deal. The fourth run scored on a wild pitch by Enosil Tejeda.
Carolina concludes their series with Lynchburg on Monday night at 7:15 p.m. Purchase tickets today by calling (919) 269-2287, or visiting carolinamudcats.com.
