Winston-Salem Dash News Release
WINSTON-SALEM DASH (16-17) at POTOMAC NATIONALS (18-16)
Game two starters: RHP Jason Van Skike (2-0, 0.60 ERA) vs. RHP Blake Schwartz (2-1, 0.60 ERA)
12 p.m. - Pfitzner Stadium (Woodbridge, VA)
DASH, P-NATS SUSPENDED AFTER FOUR With Potomac enjoying a 4-1 lead through four innings Saturday, a strong batch of showers hit Pfitzner Stadium. After an 85-minute rain delay, the contest was officially suspended, and it will be finished as part of a de facto doubleheader this afternoon. The Dash plated the first run of the game on a David Herbek RBI single in the second, but the Nationals took the lead thanks to four runs in the fourth against Winston-Salem starter Chris Beck, who stands to be the loser if this score holds. After the conclusion of Saturday's game, the Dash and P-Nats will square off in a seven-inning affair.
RAIN, RAIN...GO AWAY For the first time this season, the Dash waited out a rain delay Saturday. Winston-Salem has had a pair of home games postponed due to rain thus far in 2013, but both were rescheduled before gates opened at BB&T Ballpark. Saturday's contest marks the first suspended game for the Dash since April 22, 2012, against Wilmington, which was a game the Dash went on to win when it was completed June 8.
ROTATION TWEAKS The Dash announced some adjustments to their starting rotation, and Jason Van Skike will make his second career minor league start in today's seven-inning finale. Van Skike has only allowed one earned run in 15 frames with the Dash since a promotion from Low-A Kannapolis on April 12. Righties Justin Collop (2-3, 5.79 ERA) and Terance Marin (2-2, 7.04 ERA) will head from the rotation to the bullpen. The Dash's fifth rotation spot still has not been filled, which means that the club's starter for Tuesday's homestand opener has yet to be announced.
DASHING AWAY Winston has lost seven of its last 10 games since completing a sweep of Wilmington on April 28. Since then, first-place Myrtle Beach has gained four games on the Dash, who host the Pelicans for a three-game set beginning Tuesday.
HEISLER'S ON-BASE STREAK Dating back to last season, Winston-Salem outfielder Adam Heisler has reached base in 36 straight games, which is the third-longest current streak in Minor League Baseball. Jamal Austin of High Desert (High-A, Seattle) has reached safely in 43 straight games, while Scooter Gennett of Nashville (Triple-A, Milwaukee) is working on a 39-game run. Even though it has not been officially entered into the statistics, Heisler extended his streak to 37 games with a hit by pitch in the second inning last night.
MORE ON THE STREAK Heisler reached in his final three games of 2012 while with rookie-level Great Falls before finding his way on base in all 33 games this year (19 with Low-A Kannapolis and 14 with Winston-Salem). Heisler has hit safely in 29 of these 36 games, during which he owns a .312 average (44-for-141) with 16 RBIs and 26 runs scored.
FARRELL IS GOING STREAKING, TOO Dash infielder Jeremy Farrell boasts a 10-game hitting streak, which is the longest active run in the Carolina League. Farrell is one game shy of teammate Mark Haddow (April 6-18) and Salem prospect Garin Cecchini (April 22-May 4), whose 11-game streaks are the longest in the CL thus far this season. During this run, the Long Branch, N.J., native boasts a batting average of .366 (15-for-41) with three homers and 12 RBIs. This spurt has propelled Farrell to a .278 overall average, which is second to Chris Curley (.301) on the club. The former Pirates farmhand has also driven in 25 runs thus far in 2013, which is good for third in the CL.
LAST SEASON AGAINST POTOMAC Winston-Salem turned in a 15-5 record versus the P-Nats a year ago, which included a perfect 10-0 mark at BB&T Ballpark. The Dash hit .311 and scored 7.4 runs per game in those 20 games. At Pfitzner Stadium, the Dash and Nationals each won a three-game set following a four-game series split from April 30-May 3.
